Because he will learn a lot and benefit from being in the squad, and be happy that he is singularly unlikely to play unless there is a combination of injuries and/or dismissals. Imagine a 30 year-old keeper with 2 young kids telling his wife that he's skipping the family holiday for the good of the country. Butland's career closely resembles that of Joe Hart, who as a teenager 4 years ago had 'only' played for Shrewsbury apart from age-group internationals.
