as for us, we've got 4 teams above us to play, 3 of them in a row:

 

Brighton, Leicster, Boro, Cardiff

 

6 are potentially battling to stay up, given they are all currently 6 points or less off the drop zone

 

Ipswich, Huddersfield, Wolves, Bristol, Blackpool, Charlton

 

by the time some of them come around, one or two may have pulled clear

 

but we still have 4 games to come against teams that are more likely going to be in the play off spots when we play them

A long time ago I was manager of Stretford's British Athletics League team.

In 1975 I had run regularly in the first team, and managed the second team, whose league fixtures do not coincide.

The first team manager packed up and I was asked to take the first team.

In 1976 we very narrowly won promotion to the first division, finishing as runners-up to Swansea.

Everyone expected Stretford to be relegated (as Sale had been every time they had been in the top flight) and we had a distinctly young team, and many said we would be better to stay down for another year.

On 5 March 1977 there were 3 national indoor relay championships:

in the sprint relay we finished second.

In the Medley (800m/600m/400m/200m) we finished second to Loughborough Students (featuring S Coe over 800m).

In the Junior Medley we finished second to Borough Road (PE) College (whose team included one of our own members).

The same day the Junior cross-country team finished third in the National CC championships.

17 medals on one day definitely had a feel-good factor.

Then in late April we opened the season with a match against Loughborough Students. I reasoned that if they came much below full strength we would win, and if they were at or near full strength we would experience the standard we would need in the league.

They rested Coe and 5 others - we won the match, and self-confidence was sky high in the team.

We went into the last league fixture in second place but level on points, and ended the season in second place. At the time that was the best that any Northern club had done, and was also the best that a newly-promoted team has ever done.

If we had stayed down another year we would probably have got promoted, but without the same level of belief. It matters!

Its more the fact that we'll be playing catch up with those already up there and those who get the new enhanced parachute payments.

it's imperative for a club like ours to get there financially but as proven with cash rich clubs like the mighty QPR,it doesn't necessarily buy success.

we've a good young manager in Dougie Freeedman,given a few extra quid to spend,he'll keep our place in the Premier after next season unlike Harry the car window licker

I think we could benefit by giving Dougie another season to put his stamp on things but I'm greedy and want to get back up this season and fight like hell to stay up next season. Watford will go down if they win promotion because they don't own any players, Wigan/Southampton/reading whoever stays up will struggle so we would have a chance with a few good signings especially if promotion means we can keep Alonso, Spearing and Dawson
