Gartside Out!

Fascinating post, Casino. At the time I was 12, 13 and not really aware of the whole political situation at Wanderers.

Nice to see that the grass ain't always greener and presuming that anewman isn't some teenager with no knowledge of the Hargreaves regime then it's surprising that he's so keen to see the back of Philly G.

'The day after that, Hargreaves and his board sold Frandsen to Jack Walker’s notorious spendthrifts for just £1.75 million'

Only Bolton could manage to flog players of the quality of Gudjohnsen and Frandsen, to clubs with almost limitless of amounts of cash like Blackburn and Chelsea, for such paltry amounts.

like it or not, gudjohnsen was of no interest to anybody else as medicals said his ankle was fcuked

hang on, when we bought him, or sold him?

if you mean the latter I don't recall but surely Chelsea wouldn't have paid for £4M for someone with fucked ankles?  no one touched him after his PSV injury so he went home and we took a chance though it took sometime before he got fit enough to play for us regulary

as an aside

I'm a PG fan, but lad I used to work with, his grandparents were on the BWFC board back in the 90s and he hates PG because apparently he fucked the board over share wise when he took over as chairman - all depends what side you want to take and why, can't imagine any board is squeaky clean

That's how i remember it as well. He was one of our few saleable assets and i seem to remember Allardyce saying that he was sold to keep the club afloat after we missed out on promotion. Even so, £4M was a joke for someone who went on to play for Barcelona.

i got my info from somebody very well connected

chelsea were the only show in town and it was take it or leave it

I'm impressed they still paid £4M for him if his ankles were fucked and at the time probably seemed like good business for us

the fact his ankles weren't fucked suggests someone on their medical staff were taking the piss and exploiting our precarious financial position

or someone on our medical staff was not a very good judge of ankles

i very much doubt the "leave it" option would've been taken up, not if eidur had owt to do with it

Wasn't the situation that we had brought Eidur back to become a real class player (like the promise he had shown as a teenager).

If we had got promoted we might have been able to keep him, but he was beyond argument ready for Premier League and to retain him in the second tier would do neither him nor the club any real favour - some clogger would take him out.

Chelsea were interested but no other club. So they were able to feel noble by paying £4M. If, say, Arsenal had been bidding against them that would have increased significantly.
