This is all scarily reminiscent of 81/2 and 82/3 in the second tier. That ended up with relegation and we didn't get back to that level for a decade.

 

Rioch turned it around eventually but we can't afford to be plumbing those depths again.

Bruce Rioch took over and signed a good solid keeper who had played for his previous club. Then a couple of months into the season he went and bought a good solid striker who had played for his previous club. That started us on an upward path that ended when Big Sam called it a day.

This isn't bad compared with 25 years ago. Jesus it's not even close.

 

Philosophically speaking, if I knew now that we would come back up I'd take going down to the very bottom, because what a ride it was coming through the divisions. You've got to taste the lows to appreciate the highs. My happiest memories were in Div 4 and 3, and I have no interest in the Premier anymore, although I know that's where it's at.

 

The worry is that we could be the club that dies. One of the Lancashire clubs will end up being the Woolworths of local football.

I'm pretty sure I disagree. Neal took us further down and we sneaked back up. Didn't ever feel we were on the right track under him.

 

For me, the moment I got really excited was signing Andy Walker. Couldn't believe we signed him.
