Wot free to air channel is it on? Would like to see a few games but aint seen it advertised on any of the major channels.

All England games are on BBC, Saturdays game against France at Wiggin is on BBC2 at 7.30pm.

Walks in, thinks WTF, and walks out......

Out of the 32 competing countries the 2014 football world cup semis will have at least 2 out of the following 4; Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina. Only 8 countries have ever won it. Only 11 have ever reached the semis.

Now this is one Malc, but I reckon that at least 20 teams must have reached the semis of the World Cup

I do agree though that 2 of the 4 mentioned above will no doubt get to the semi final stage again

Final, sorry, not semis.

:good:

I must admit, I did quite enjoy watching the RL (Tonga v Cook Islands) last week. I usually watch RU as that's what they play were I live  - I can happily concede that the RL game is faster and the guys playing are less rotund. I'll be fucked if I know why one attracts massive crowds year in year out at Twickers and the other only gets 3 blokes and a dog watching them. Having said that, I can see the merits of both and think they are both worth watching in their own way

One is an event created by marketing and media gurus, the other is knockabout created by blokes who run shoe shops and butchers.

And I sort of like that. There's some lads at work look down their nose but I have to say there's quite a few not so secretly love a bit of league.

A quote from one last week from a lad who was off to the Scotland v USA game.

Big lad at work: I play union though

Me: have you tried a bit of league?

Him: I'm not hard enough (winks)

We get loads of league lads train at grasshoppers close season.....fitter bigger faster ....does that make league a better game? Unreservedly NO

Is it really? I never knew that... :D

Just let me just put this beast back into the water because the keepnet is bursting...

Bolty bolty bolty...this argument you have my friend isn't even built on sand.

Out of the 32 competing countries the 2014 football world cup semis will have at least 2 out of the following 4; Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina. Only 8 countries have ever won it. Only 11 have ever reached the semis.

Out of the 20 Premier League teams, 3 of the top 4 will be Utd, Chelsea, City, Arsenal.

Out of all the men playing tennis, 3 of the 4 semi finalists at Wimbledon this year will be Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Ferrer.

Out of the (apparent) 297 billion people playing union worldwide, the next rugby union world cup semi will be at least 3 out of the following 4: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England.

Only 5 countries have ever been in the union final (compared to 4 in league) - only 4 have ever won it (compared to 3 in league).

Yet you're taking the piss out of league because its fairly well predicted that 3 of the 4 semi finalists are guaranteed?

Brilliant... :D

Argument!!!??? It is merely jousting mon ami. I wouldn't argue with the bloke I hope will one day be PM  ;)

Massively impressed, however, at the amount of work you've gone to there. Sterling stuff.

Now, when the fucking Aussies win it in a relative walkover, can we all agree it's been a waste of everybody's time?

I disagree with Fellman. I think the next FIFA World Cup will be lifted by Brazil. They are driven by what they see as injustice in 1950. Suicides, riots etc. followed that one. Convinced that it will be a (fulfilled) national quest to lift it this time. If anyone will stop them it would have the be the Argies.

anyway bolty, fook knows why you're arguing about league with smiffs

its every wuigginers number one sport, why would he be any different

3 of Saturday's England RU team went to one school in Wigan.

And so did 3 of the probable England RL squad for Saturday!

Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia*, Czechoslovakia, England, France, Germany**, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Uruguay, USA, USSR, West Germany**, Yugoslavia*,

But it hasn't been a waste of time. Far from it.

Full houses at so many of the games. A resurgence in interest from folk once latent and also new fans alike. No balls for example. I didn't think she'd enjoy it. Fucking loved it.

The success of the USA team has even made the New York Post. Unheard of.

It's about getting the product out there to the masses. We've been shit at it for years. Bit by bit it improves and more get interested.

Then once they realise it's not actually a game for fat pitmen in cloggs played under the shadows of dark satanic mills it might become nearly as popular as union. Nearly. ;)

Not really a newbie but I see your point, My uncle from New Springs.  He'll be looking down, sort of proud from the ground work he did in the 70s

Now CWP, he's a newbie who loved it

Knock on! :D

We had lads at work wearing daft t-shirts made to go to games.  I think you'll see stuff happen in the next few years from this

Look at all those kids at the game at your gaff

Edited by no balls

Oh & I find it rather odd to rate a game purely on winning. That sort of thing is very New World.

We're English for goodness sake.

Olive branch time. No winding up or piss taking. I sincerely hope you are right for the sake of all you RL afficionados who, if nothing else, never fail to impress by your level of devotion.

I will always prefer RU but a certain pride would exist at a northern working mens game becoming popular worldwide. If I live that long.

You are forgetting that RL broke away in 1895 on the issue of broken time payments. The rules were changed after 10 years, reducing to 13 players, and over time in various ways to improve the game for spectators.

RU was slow to change, but eventually (1960s?) withdrew the ground gained from kicking directly into touch apart from within the defensive quarter. My how tedious it was before that!

The England RU team of 1890 to 1895 was dominated by players from clubs that broke away, such as Dewsbury, Wakefield Trinity and Tyldesley, something which RU journalists and administrators choose to forget or ignore.

The conversion to professionalism 100 years later by RU means it now has the upper hand in everything except spectacle and skill.

I have forgotten many things Malcolm. Human hard drives like you have become a bit of a crutch for me - honestly.

Right now I am struggling to remember where my will to live is.

On the ale in Wigan pre match from two bells

Walk in the park so far

Quelle surprise

Oh

Eorl Crabtree has a face that looks like a cross between Nicko McBrain, alan Rickmans German henchman in Die Hard, and a weatherbeaten shed.

A remarkable face.

Landed free tickets for the final. Will be quality if England make it, although NZ v Aus would be a class game and all

Can't wait!

Watched the RU today in a rough pub in Lancaster, and watched the RL game back in a soft pub in Leigh.

  • 4 weeks later...

Castleford's Dave Higson it would seem!
