The character statements about his previous behaviour around guns & public places shows either SA is utterly fucked up or the judge thought him being a reckless gun toting prick with an attitude wasn't relevant

I worked with a bloke who shot dead a fella who was in his house, chased him out and as he was jumping the wall to escape a bullet hit his head and he fell to his death. Police turned up and said there was a serious problem as he was outside the property. The other copper dragged him into the property and that was that, case over self defence

What people are missing is that if she gave him a maximum sentence he would have appealed and been released on bail for years whilst appeals went on. Ultimately given his families resources they could have dragged it on for years and years whilst he was essentially a free man. Possibly once out of the limelight he'd have won an appeal anyway. The best chance of him actually serving jail time was a sentence like this I think.

Definitely not. But then this is not a normal situation or case. Of course he shouldn't have preferential treatment. But then given sentencing history for the crime he has been convicted of he isn't getting preferential treatment necessarily. The easy thing to do would have been to given him 5 years with no jail time on account of his disability. That is what many were expecting. So it isn't a cop out entirely.

 

But at the end of the day would you be happier if he'd been given 15 years, appealed immediately and been living a carefree life for years and years, possibly forever with absolutely no punishment at all? Because that was a very possible scenario. This way at least he is getting something.....
