The previous 3 games were against mid-table teams that we could compete against, and make them chase the game. This was a game against a team going all out for 2nd position, which we approached without one of our three strikers fully fit.

 

We needed have a strong defensive line-up to stop them scoring. If we got a goal on the break, that's a bonus.

 

It's not entertaining, but I'm 99% certain that entertaining the fans is not top of the list of DF's priorities when it comes to an away game at Derby.

That on Tuesday night was diabolical, epitomised by the corner we got in the second half, it was taken short & ended back on the half way line, that wasn't football, that was anti-football.

 

Derby were no great shakes, thankfully, because if they were it would've been another Reading. Dougie, like you, clearly gave them far too much respect.

 

I really can't put it into words, it really was a 'you had to be there' scenario. Negative from the start & Fucking awful throughout. This was Derby we were playing, not Chelsea or Man City.

 

If they had scored, which they should've, setting up so negatively for a draw would also have been for nothing. Just because we got the draw doesn't make it justifiable. Again, YOU REALLY HAD TO BE THERE.

But therein lives the dilemma.

 

Go there, see the negativity and be pissed off.

Those two teams were average mid-table teams who, other than an outside chance of the playoffs, have very little to play for.

 

Derby have to go all guns blazing now to try and sneak into 2nd place because the play-offs are a lottery and tend to not favour the 3rd place team.

 

I believe that was probably his thinking. In hindsight (which is ALWAYS 20/20) we probably could have won that game if we'd have attacked them more.

 

However, with Mason being ill and Wheater (who has been a rock) not feeling 100% I can see why DF wanted to offer the defence more protection against a team that he believed would batter us if he didn't.

 

 

As I said, hindsight is 20/20.

I had forgotten about that. A short corner, and then hoofed back to the halfway line, with everybody trotting back, it was bizarre.

 

Even when we attacked in that last 20 minutes we never seemed to have more than 3 players in the opposition half, as players ventured forward they were told to get back by both DF and CF.

 

I understand that we went for a point, but it was as though we didn't want to risk getting all 3 points.

 

I'm glad we got a point, and it's obviously better than losing, but it really was grim and we obviously didn't want to commit to having any players in the oppositions half towards the end of the game, so the ball just kept coming back every time we hoofed it forward.

 

Still, at least the run continues and hopefully we will be a bit more adventurous in the next game

I was there & was very happy with both the performance & the result, & like the majority, applauded the team at the end. At no point was i bored, in fact i found it compelling  to see that we have a team that was prepared to fight for the cause again, especially with the number of players missing.

 

Under Fathead there were lots of games like this & they were a major part in our progress up the league. There are times when holding onto  a point is the priority but trying to pinch a goal, are the correct tactics, IMO it was right at Derby.

 

There're some very short memories, if on the back of a couple of good wins, some people are pining for a return to anything like Coyle's clueless "attacking" football that caused us such massive, lasting damage..........,if that useless cunt had understood how to grind out results like this, we'd still be in the premier league.

Great post. While I completely get being there offers a different perspective, spending shed loads, leaving work early, giving an evening/day(s) up to not be entertained, seeing a negative change in approach, no threat on goal etc etc. Most of us have been there, in those situations, and usually that emotional initial reaction is one of frustration and criticism. But in the cold light of day, we've not lost! Getting a point is a good result, surely most of us would have accepted this before the game regardless of how it came about? And as you say, this happened loads of times under BSA. Had we lost criticism would be slightly more justified. But it's fine margins, remember the famous speed penalty game at city? Battered completely and stole the game at death. We didn't do that, but we didn't lose.
