England 1 Italy 2

Not too long to go now. Getting excited. No idea why, but as long as Hodgson doesn't send us out to play too negatively, I fancy us to get off to a winning start. 2-0 (Sturridge and Rooney).

Heard some good news this morning that Welbeck may be struggling with a thigh injury. Fingers crossed it's bad enough to keep him out and means Sterling plays.

  • Things were good, things were disappointing. Second goal should have been defended much better. But we showed no fear - at times, Italy were piling men back because they knew we were coming at them.

I love folk getting angry about getting beat 2-1 by Italy, you're a clueless as the once every 2 years football fans who emerge from the woodwork at a major tournament sporting brand new england shirt

And there have been plenty of games where Gerrard has almost single handedly dragged an average Liverpool side to victory.

It works both ways.

Don't think I'll ever forget that game at Reebok where we were two up and he singlehandedly got them back second half. One of the best individual displays I have seen

There's no doubting the likes of Beckham, Gerrard & Lampard had talent I just feel they have been over-hyped, they hardly shone in major tournaments for their country.

im also intrigued that these little passes are 'the simple thing'

i guess thats why just about every team in the world plays simple one touch football

They might not be the best in the world, but they are/were the best we had.

Ryan Giggs was a brilliant footballer, but hasn't shone in a major tournament.

See I think this is where we go wrong , yes all three were the best we had but were they the best for the England team, it seemed we always had to play them when maybe a lesser play would have complemented 2 of them, people said for ages that Gerrard & Lampard just seem to be unable to play together but manager after manager played them together, like I said maybe another player would have allowed either of them to play the way they play for their club, it’s a team game pick a team which may not be the best 11 you have

I never spotted that one....quality argument for the defence.

Mourinho nearly bought Gerrard whilst at Chelsea first time round

he obviously thought they could play together

Maybe playing Makelele behind them would have made it work?

This is my point.

Liverpool conceeded 50 goals last season, due to the awfull defense, that includes Gerrard & Henderson.

We either sort the defensive unit out, or we accept we will be weak when teams attacke us, as we are playing 4-2-4.

I would put a actual defensive midfielder behind Gerrard & Henderson, leaving out the Central attacker. Allowing Gerrard to do his 50 yarders to the Wingers.

Gerrard doing his 50 yard passes out to the winger means that when the 'winger' then looks to play the ball into the box there's only usually one player in the box to aim for ... usually surrounded by three defenders.  That's the issue I have with his Hollywood passes - they take too many of our own players out of the game.

There's a time and a place for them, such as when we're counter-attacking, but they shouldn't be the basis of all our attacks.

Even though he's our best midfielder I actually think we'll be a better team once he's retired.

Its simple probability, we lose the balll more when we go long....and that is what they are....long balls.

Did Wales ever get into a major tournament?

Facts Snoop facts...tsk tsk

They were quarter-finalists in 1958, losing by the only goal to Brazil.

But they qualified by the back door. Israel won the Asian group because nobody would play against them.

FIFA decided they could not qualify without beating someone, so runners-up in European groups were approached to have a play-off against Israel. Belgium declined the opportunity (neither Holland nor Italy were asked) and Wales stepped in.

The second leg was on 5 Feb 1958, which is why Jimmy Murphy was not on ManU's trip to Belgrade via Munich, as he was Wales manager as well as Busby's assistant manager. This allowed that club to continue to function, with consequences.
