Hodgson cost us the game the only real threat was down the left so he firstly shouldn't have started Rooney there and then had the chance to change it earlier with a hardworking covering left midfielder I'd have put Milner in there to cover Baines. If Rooney has to play he plays in the hole if not there he shouldn't play.

im not saying we played bad or anything but they were there for the taking and we fucked it up with a needless gamble.

 

We created enough to get at least a point. Rooney was the main culprit, missing the easiest chance. If he scores the 'gamble' pays off.

Thought we did ok, certainly not outclassed like 2 years ago.

Saw enough tonight to be confident of beating Uruguay and Costa Rica.

We don't necessarily need two wins. If Italy beat Costa Rica as expected, four points would almost certainly see us through in second place. If we draw with Uruguay and beat Costa Rica, Uruguay would need to beat Italy by at least three clear goals to qualify ahead of us.

It would come down to goal difference but it would still be possible to qualify. If the following set of results happen:

 

Italy beat Costa Rica.

We beat Costa Rica.

Italy beat Uruguay.

 

England, Uruguay and Costa Rica would finish with three points each.

Spot on, for Baines to be as affective for england as us, he needa to have the cover to really play his game.

I agree there. He played Sterling and he would have known it was a gamble, but went for it anyway. I think Mounts has a point he should have given Baines some protection as the game wore on but I enjoyed that game more than any in South Africa or the Euros and last time we played them. World Cup is shaping up to be excellent as well, South Africa overall was crap compared to this, so far obv

Did Hodgson really play a 4-2-4 formation in the first group match of a major tournament, or was I imagining things.

 

We looked dangerous going forward, tho finishing is still iffy. We looked a bit under-strength in midfield. We never got hold of their right wing play and it cost us dear.  IMHO.

 

It's not all over yet by a long chalk, but lessons need to be learned or Uruguay & Costa Rica will try to exploit the same weaknesses.
