After much ado, I have received a response from TFGM, which confirms that travel times will reduce once reduced to 2 lanes;

Dear BD

You have expressed an interest in knowing how journey times will be affected by the introduction of the bus lanes on the A580.  TfGM has carried out an extensive programme of analysis to examine and understand the impacts of the proposals. This includes the use of highway assignment models to understand impacts both on the A580 and on other nearby routes and detailed junction performance assessments to optimise traffic signal operation.

I have attached a summary of output from the highway assignment model which shows current and anticipated traffic journey times on A580 between Moorside Road and Lancaster Road. This is one of the busiest parts of the A580 corridor.

You will appreciate that flows vary along the given length of road due to the entry and exit of vehicles along the route at junctions. Flows also vary depending on the day of week and the time of year. For the purposes of the traffic modelling and analysis, we followed best practice and examined impacts in an average October weekday, which is considered to represent “typical” traffic conditions.

With respect to the change from three lanes being available for general traffic to there being two lanes and one for bus; the overall impact of this is mitigated by the improvements made to the traffic signal controls within this area. Also, in all cases, the bus lanes will terminate in advance of the junction stop lines, so the number of lanes available for general traffic at junctions will not be affected.

The modelling exercise demonstrates that the critical Manchester (east) bound mor

ning peak hour direction of travel sees the greatest benefit from the proposed measures, resulting in an approximate 40% decrease in journey times, equating to more than a 2 minute time saving for travellers. This includes a significant reduction in delay at the Worsley Road junction, achieved by re-timing the traffic signals to give more time to the eastbound straight-ahead movement along A580.

For our analysis, we assumed an overall traffic growth of 8% for the morning peak and 6.7% to the evening peak between 2009 and 2016; figures derived from the Greater Manchester Strategy Planning Model. It is also important to note that we took a conservative approach to modelling the impacts of the scheme on both the forecast bus journey times and the impact on general road traffic. Despite the experience of other Bus Rapid Transit projects, similar to the bus priority package, the model does not include the additional benefits attributed to modal shift – such as transfers from car to bus. This simplifies the analysis, but it also means that the junction designs are based on slightly higher than expected flows, building in a level of prudence into the designs

That sounds about right, no amount of lanes will do anything if the junctions are not up to standard.

Manchester council/gmpte didnt want the congestion charge.

They went to the government for investment into public transportation and were told only if you bring in the congestion charge.

So they went to consultation and were never realistically expecting a yes vote.

The theory at the moment is cause utter chaos for a shorter period rather than drag a smaller amount of chaos out for years and years doung the work in bits.

Plus if project A gets finished but it needs project B to be done to work properly the carnage would drag out longer.

Reducing the a6 through the centre of Salford wouldnt be a problem if there was a realistic new route in place when they did it.

A couple of weeks ago when there was the usual chaos, my mate was stuck not moving and got talking to 2 coppers who were placed to sort out drivers using the wrong lane on Deansgate due to a road change a year or two ago....they said that they have been unequivocally told that the Council is making life as difficult for motorists and their directives are affecting the policing of the roads too.

All because the congestion charge didn't come in.

Not sayingf they are correct, but this came from police officers on duty

It is politically motivated

Anti business, anti car, climate change ideologues

Personally, I'd rather travel in by train, but it''s just shit and expensive

There's a left turn lane into Liverpool Rd, which is closed at the bottom. If someone wants to turn right up Gt Bridgewater St (which was also closed last week), no fucker gets down Deansgate. It's fucking madness.

That's the exact spot where the police were ensuring that nobody in the left lane tried to cut in and go straight, as per my above post.

They could just go left and round the back of Dmitri's, you can get onto Quay St and back onto Deansgate, miles quicker!

My commute is now a steady 30 mins each way to Blackburn. Piece of piss and I don't miss the M60 one little bit.

it's great going norf innit? Though this morning was a big of a bugger due to a broken down car in the M6

I lost my bag in Newport Pagnell.

I left the north ..... I travelled south.

Went to two interviews and got offered both jobs.

Got to be your fingering technique?

Aye, whilst working the shaft too, obvs.

Stabbing isn't it

I won't do any generalising but I have my suspicions

Ahh is that on the roundabout at the end of Deansgate?  Somebody's just posted a video of that.  Doesn't really give anything away though.

Manunian Way? That's the way I'd go if I wasn't a trainwanker.

  • 2 weeks later...

No trains to Piccadilly this morning. All cancelled.

With regards to these average speed cameras.

I regularly go through 3-4 of them at about 3mph.  Does that not reduce my average speed massively?

I should be able to go as fast as I want the rest of the way shouldn't I?
