Just had a meeting on Churchgate. Sad to see the Bolton News offices empty. And in a week or two the Travel Counsellors building opposite will be empty. Another 200+ people spending approx £20 per week on parking and lunches in the town... plus whatever other services they spend their hard-earned on - all being lost. Very sad state of affairs.

 

When will it get better? Should these empty offices be turned into apartments?

Back in the day; probably early 60s to mid 70s, we had slum clearances. Swathes of (mostly) terraced mill-worker’s properties were compulsorily purchased. My dad’s childhood home on Victory Street was one such property. It had a toilet out in the yard and no bathroom. A shithole!

Mum’s childhood house; similarly mill-workers terraced house was spared because someone had had the foresight to put an inside bathroom and toilet. Hers is still standing on Augustus Street in Great Lever. 
 

I wonder if something as simple as having or not having indoor ablutions was the prime factor in whether large areas stayed or went.

I reckon those houses which survived the clearance (but only just) became the cheaper housing stock which became the areas of high-immigrant numbers we still see today. I’m just about old enough to remember the early immigrants who bought a mid-terrace property and painted it gaudy colours in order to further reduce the value of housing in the area (I attended a Hindu wedding about 20 years ago and got confirmations of this being a plan from the start). The indigenous inhabitants suddenly realised they needed to get out before their house value reduced further.

Lots of my parents’ friends and family thought they were absolutely barmy because they bought a semi-detached house in Harwood for £1,500 off plan in 1959 instead of a traditional “well built” Accrington brick terrace like most others bought.

Agree with this, inexpensive housing attracts folk on low income, immigrants more likely to take this housing because of low income,  some of those make money and move to better housing/locations.

Yes I too agree. But let’s say we had 2 choices. Live in a poor white area or live in a poor Asian area all day everyone on here would choose the poor white area. My point is if we had a choice none of us would choose to live with them.

I think you are correct, you are more likely to live where you are same colour and ethnicity. My mate just sold in LH because of this issue, moved to Barnsley.

Deane is seen as a poor area. 2 choices you can live at the bottom with the Asians or at the top with the white people all day everyone on here would say top. But people like london white and Crawley would have us believe they would choose  bottom of Deane.
