As you say M61 / M60 is usually best avoided at rush hour

 

I've done sheff a few times from Chorley and go M65 towards Blackburn, grain road to Harlingen then pick up M66 / M60 then over one of the passes

 

I'm not sure it's worth going back on yourself from Bolton, depends what side you are setting off from I suppose

 

What about going to Bury and picking up the M66 there followed by M60?
