Just found some more stuff out about him.He was 15 Years 3 months when he enlisted. He told them that he was 20. Fuck me!!! Exactly. How many of that age today would do that?

We are going to visit the Thiepval Memorial, let me know his name I will place one of the poppy crosses on the memorial in memory of a true Manchester legend the likes of which we will never see again.

His name was Frank Tasker - Private in the Durham Light Infantry - Died 24/8/1918. He was a machine-gunner

 

Got various Army Numbers and Service numbers for him but it's a bit confusing because of the fact that he joined up, got kicked out and then joined up again - 46613 (Service number) 3373 and 52785 (Army numbers)

 

Got a pic of his grave but can't post it on here because it's limiting photo size to post to 23kb. His grave is at the Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt. Presume his name will still be at Thiepval???

 

Also his official army record conflicts with postcards that he sent as to where he was and when. We know he was on The Somme late July 1916 but his official record has him at Camiers on the 24th July. He was returned to the UK on the 27th Oct after being found to be under age on the 23rd Oct - word of mouth passed down from his sister (my grandmother) had him injured on The Somme and sent to a field hospital which is where he was found to be underage as they obviously had to inform his parents who grassed him up

 

Unfortunately he wasn't a Manchester legend. He was a Yorkie from a small village near Knaresborough (my Mum's side of the family) but let's not hold that against him eh?

Got the grave number v11A6 and the cemetery is a couple miles from the Thiepval Memorial so that's another poppy destination

Some of those ghost soldiers were in Bolton near the Uni at around 12-00, very touching and fantastic effort.

My uncle spent many years researching and documenting the Chorley Pals including erecting plaques and recording grave locations in France, eventually a monument was erected on Chorley Flat Iron to the Pals.

I really appreciate it mate and apologies to all for making so much of this thread. It's been an emotional week. 8 days ago I stood on the runway at Gibraltar airport where my Dad served his country with the RAF during World War 2. It was the first time I'd been able to do it. I sent a photo my Mum. She cried when I got home as he'd never been able to go back there before he died. My Mum and various relatives are massively in to family history and I spent a summer a couple of years ago, when I was out of work, digging into the archives and scanning all the old photos, postcards, etc from all the family to try to pull everything together. The combination of the stories that I grew up with, combined with the photos/etc truly blew me away. An updated photo of Frank's grave or memorial would blow my 80-year old mother's mind away. She truly wouldn't be able to thank you enough

Fantastic stuff mate, and no need to apologise for this thread, their efforts deserve all the recognition and tributes and much much more.

 

My family is the same as yours, massively in to family history, having lost quite a few members in World War One.

My dad actually only mentioned yesterday he'd lost two uncles at The Somme, I knew he'd lost another at Gallipoli in addition to my mum losing three great uncles there.

Been today and after a 2 hour search we found the cemetery where Frank is buried, a long drive down a single track road with short walk at the end, Perfect spot for a hero basking in the sunshine with views across the French countryside. As an added bonus they also printed off at Thiepval monument commemorative certificate issued by CWGC containing Franks details, his parents names and a picture of the cemetery.
