Appointment in Grimsby today at 10am to potentially win a big contract

 

Left Manc at 6.45. M62 a nightmare, main road into Grimsby closed, major roadworks on the alternative route, starting to sweat and getting angry as I'm stuck behind tractors and queues. Finally get free of it all and happily motoring along with sat nav saying i'll arrive at 9.55. Next thing unmarked cop car bazzes past me at way over 100mph on a country road with it's blue lights flashing.

 

Go round a bend a few minutes later and it's fucking carnage. People and cars all over the place and both sides of the road at a standstill. I can't adequately describe the scene. I've been doing over 40.000 miles a year for the last 30 years and have seen a lot of bad accidents but this one topped it. I was at the front of the queue that was stopped and was way too close than was comfortable. If anyone survived I'd be amazed but I could see people still strapped in their seats with no idea if they were alive or dead

 

Is it me or is it getting worse these days? Are drivers more complacent because of the in-built safety features in cars? Is the driving test getting shitter? Do people not give a shit anymore on the roads? Too many cars on the roads?

 

Weirdly enough, when I was stuck in the earlier queues I genuinely thought about the M61 thread from the other week and thought fuck it if I'm late, I'm late and chilled out but today is the first day that I can say that I was genuinely traumatised by what I saw

You have to have your wits about you, impatience too loads are too keen to get where they are going, weaving in and out, undertaking I don't think it's the test, it's down to there here and now culture, no body likes waiting

I watched that Licence to Kill last night on BBC iPlayer, originally shown in 2013.

 

Some pretty graphic footage particularly of that kid from City who killed two people, their Nissan was virtually demolished by his Merc.

 

Real dusty eye moment when the Sikh kid who'd been in a coma woke up and was asking for his mum, who sadly had been killed in the crash.

If I leave Rossendale no later than 630, then i can normally be at either for 830. Leave any later and it's 2 1/2 hours+

I do about 45K miles per year. I used to love driving, I hate it now. The roads are chaos everyday

Worked in and around Hull  last August. Also used to leave Rossendale at around 6am, get through to the Services at the A1M intersection and have a brew. Piece of piss after that point. Used to arrive in Beverley at around 8:10. Would hate to be doing it on a daily basis though.

I'm in Leeds for 3pm then London after that meeting

Said it before, mobile phones are the cause of probably 90% of accidents i reckon.

 

Even on hands free, your concentration dips by a huge amount when you are talking to someone who isn't there. so many times, I've been on the phone for about 20/30 minutes whilst driving, and at the end of the call it occurs to me that f asked, I probably wouldn't be able to recall a single detail of my journey whilst having the conversation. Try it, it's scary.

 

I do 40k a year and the amount of people you now see staring at their laps as they hurtle along is frightening.

 

Only this morning, i saw a tractor mount a verge on the A49 because the daft bumpkin tractor wanker was busy texting naked pictures of his sister to his other sister. Probably. He culd have wiped out a car had he swerved the opposite way.

 

And as for the M6. Forget it.

Had a job on the road for nine months, hated it. Unfortunately once you get into it, and the adrenaline kicks in its easy to get into the zone and drive a bit closer to the edge. Used to get home and feel like I was still moving.

 

Only a pager to distract you then and as the population has grown so has the number of cars. Don't envy anyone stuck behind a wheel nowadays, especially on a day like today.

It's a nice drive after ferrybridge before that it's a night mare. I've stopped doing lots of miles I don't find its affected turnover in our business folk quite happy to meet once or twice year then use email and phone.

Meeting in Northwich yesterday - roughly 25 mins from our office in Warrington. Nice easy journey down there.

Not so coming back. Little did we know, but a caravan had overturned and shut down all 3 lanes on the M6 northbound.

Took us 2 and a half hours to get back. Couldn't even get an internet connection in the car to see what was going on. Stationery for the most part, and then a bit of crawling.

Couldn't face being on the road daily, would kill me.

Saw lots when I used to drive to pick the kids up from Canterbury living in Cambridge. Lots off stuff that was pretty scary - worse was a lorry clip a car as it couldn't see it and the as the car swung round it just smashed through it before the car flipped on the hard shoulder, all happening next to me. Nowadays I don't ever do over 70 on motorways - its not worth it. 

 

Londoners though are the biggest pricks driving, live on a residential street, lots of young families and loads of cars go down in the morning 50/60 - only takes a kids to break free of a parent's hand and that's it.

Depending which way you go there have been some road closures. I had to divert past Humberside airport and there's bad roadworks there. Might be OK now but I'd give yourself at least 3 hours.

When I stopped driving to and from work and became a bus wanker, my stress levels arriving at home and work dropped dramatically. Unless it was cold and pissing it down and the bus was late. Even then flexi time and frequent buses eased the pain.

 

Now my biggest driving for work takes place at about 6 am on a Sunday morning when there's no other cunt on the roads.

This time of year its bearable.

But once winter kicks in , its a bloody nightmare.

Better off finding some cheap digs.

Doing 12 hours , mon tue wed . Then finish early thursday afternoon . Head home.

M62 is a mare 9 months of the year.

And friday afternoon is a non starter.
