It's not much of a spectator sport. Most martial arts are shit as "sport" though to be fair

Aye. Let's quote The Guardian. The LOV Suite of mass journalism. Sniping left wing wankers who will find bad out of anything good

  • All I care about is finishing above Australia in the medal table.

  • I bet Bolt is kicking himself that he was not more dedicated.   He could have been the most iconic athlete in the world if he had tried

It's better than the Judo, now that is shite.

Jade Jones is ace to watch when she gets interviewed, bubblier than Nicola Adams if that's possible.

pleb

Those GB tracksuits are fooking minging.

Even worse than the infamous BWFC 'bib ' strip

Even worse than the infamous BWFC 'bib ' strip

Put a bit of lace on and make it out of satin and you would be wearing it doing the hoovering tomorrow you dirty bastard.

Jade Jones wins gold

Another gold for Bolt...not bad for a lazy athlete

What the fuck is this shite though? Seriously this is a bobbins martial arts.

The other semi between the Spaniard and th'Egyptian was gash. At least Jones lands her kicks

Must be tough though bouncing around like that often on one leg

Did anyone see Stuart Flinders interviewing folk in town the other day re the Olympics ?

He said to one old dear "what's your thoughts on the Olympics"

Silly deaf bat replied " what, the Olympus chippy ?"

Could only happen in Bolton...

Agree entirely. He talks about competitors being like soldiers etc. Surely that's why sport exists: a means of people competing against each other without having to slay one another.

What a cunt.

To be fair, he does say that that is the way GB public used to think of Soviet bloc athletes promoted within the armed forces, and similarly within emerging African countries. And they did, encouraged by the, erm, media.

What has changed is that the idea of the Olympics as amateur sport has been transformed by legalising professionalism.

This firstly gave GB and other European democracies a (potentially) equal footing. The difference is that the accountability of individual sports' management to UK Sport means that they have to look critically at their own organisation. That is what has transformed, for example, Gymnastics.

In 1956 Gordon Pirie and Derek Ibbotson finished second and third to Vladimir Kuts of USSR in the Olympic 5000m.

Pirie used to work in a bank five and a half days a week and then rock up at White City on a Saturday afternoon to run for GB.

Ibbotson broke the world mile record the next year. It was not a building block, however, as he raced about three times a week for the following year. Some question why he did such a punishing racing schedule. Officially he could not be paid, but promoters found ways to circumvent the rules, but GB did not benefit as he was washed out and never a top grade contender thereafter. It would not be like that nowadays, and UK Athletics would seek to look after such talents.

So Malc, are you for the continuation of the finding these sports/athletes get?

They were debating on the radio yesterday, if the money being invested should be reduced.........although they were rather crudely just dividing the funding levels for each sport by the amount of medals won in the Olympics

Thing is malt Russia and the eastern bloc etc. were oppressive regimes using althletes for self promotion. Stories of unsuccessful athletes applying for asylum for fear of persecution etc.

Yes our athletes have been increasingly assisted by state money, but much of the success is down to lottery money. And as you suggest individual sports have to meet targets and succeed to keep funding.

That twat writing the article quotes £4m per medal; anyone can fudge statistics like that, it fails to take into account improvements in facilities etc which can only benefit general public in years to come. Moreover the culture hopefully will help reduce obesity etc and may well help to pay for itself in reduced medical costs later in life.

There's a million miles between the old soviet system and ours.

How much does one of them push irons cost that Our Jason rides?

I'm guessing it's a bit more than a Raleigh Chopper. As are them horses that Charlotte Ladygarden totters around on.

I don't care, GB is now the second best nation on Earth at winning at games.

We are probably the best in the world at finding an excuse to moan about absolutely fucking anything we can though.

Would imagine those bikes are thousands each. Research will benefit all, much like developments in f1 etc can filter down.

As you say, everyone else that can will spend money on epuipment, coaching etc- we shouldn't be moaning when it achieves success. Just wish it was true for the England football team.

Those cunts Rooney and Hart could do with whatever coaching Jason Kenny has had. We'd piss it.

Paralympic Games now in doubt?

Maybe it's time to find a permanent home for the Olympics

Financial disaster zones like Brazil can't be trusted

Gee gees gold?
