British Cycling

Sack loads of Olympic medals. Tour De France. Velodrome dominance. British Cycling is the only sport that we are the best in the world at. Made me proud when cyclists and coach's joking complained about hearing our national anthem every half hour. Now the news is full of dodgy jiffy bags. None existent medical records. Suspect use of TUE's. Bullying & sexism. None of it sounds or looks good. If this was Russian cycling every bugger would be crying foul. No cheating proven, and may not be, but it's all leaving a bitter taste. I reckon other countries are privately saying, I told you summat was fishy. Understandably too.

Too right mate. The famous "marginal improvements" and minute attention to detail does not tally with missing medical records, stolen laptops and the like.

Doesn't look good does it.

Would imagine its a tough environment to be in though, they must be pushed to the extremes, can perhaps see why its gone over the top somewhat.

If it stops Rivi being rammed with the buggers trying to emulate them it'll be a good thing. Just take drugs at home, kids and cut out the middle man.

I still haven't seen anything that constitutes cheating yet. Pushing the rules maybe - but doesn't everyone do that?

Maybe I haven't been following closely enough?

Indeed, though the hand delivery of a package from Manchester to a European competition, with medicine that apparently could be bought from a local pharmacy doesn't look good.

Forgot about that "stolen laptop". All seems very conveniet doesn't it. Even though it sounds like I'm trying to knock a success story, I'm not. Use to know some of the mechanics and staff when I had dealings with the Manchester Velodrome. Very dedicated and professional they were. Maybe all this questioning and accountability is only to be expected. From MP's, The FA, the Police and any other major organisation most of these accusations have been fired at them at one time and another.

I've said for a long time, we should just let all these athletes crack in and take as many drugs as they want

Yesterday's CMS Select Committee hearing was live on BBC Parliament (shunting the main chamber of HoC onto Red Button - something I've never known before.

Among many other things, the otc drug which Brailsford said "he had been told" was in the package has never been confirmed as fact. It seems much more likely that it was a steroid banned in competition but allowable, in limited circumstances, outside competition.

The Dr, who was 'ill' and unable to attend the hearing had the records on his laptop, which had subsequently been stolen(!). But he had failed to follow the designated Team Sky procedure to file it into Dropbox.

Sapsford, the UKAD woman, looked even sadder than usual. She said they had been stymied for almost 4 months by Dr/Patient confidentiality. But after seeking guidance from the GMC they found a way around it, by appointing an independent doctor to liaise with the relevant doctor and see Wiggins's medical records.

She also said that the medical storeroom at the Velodrome did not distinguish British Cycling's items from Team Sky's. The amount of the relevant drug held was a lot more than legal dosage for only one rider, or ostensibly legitimate amounts for a lot of riders (although she did not know the time the amount was supposed to be held for).

Whichever way you cut it, this was deep shit.

I've said for a long time, we should just let all these athletes crack in and take as many drugs as they want

That option was overruled after the death of one of the Danish cyclists in the Rome 1960 Olympic road race.

Although it was always known that prohibition (/control) would be exceedingly difficult or impossible to achieve that was the moral course to take.

And here we are.

I've said for a long time, we should just let all these athletes crack in and take as many drugs as they want

Not a chance. You have to think of it from the opposite viewpoint. If everyone was o drugs where does it end? They will be pumped up with so much shit that come event day someone will simply die of overdose, heart failure or whatever.

Say it was your kid who was a naturally talented sprinter and ended up looking like Carl Lewis due to all the shit they had to take just to remain competitive. Nah.

There's plenty out there mate.

What really sticks in the craw is the holier than thou, we are 100% clean front they put on. If it hadn't been for that most cycling fans would have shrugged off these stories as "everyone is at it in cycling".

Always wondered , Does everyone in cycling not hate them for coming out of nowhere and buying all the honours in sight Chelsea style?

Or does the hardcore cycle fan admire them for putting cycling on the map?

Seems to me folk couldn't wait for all this.

Horrible stink about this. Perhaps the French fans were right throwing piss on British riders in the last tour?

Puts a grim shadow on ALL British exploits in cycling this last 15 years.

I think Coe and co have a lot to answer and perhaps in 30 to 40 years time the complicity of some very top figures will come out.

At the end of the day we cannot now condemn the Russians when we were at it all along.

Yeah, that's right. With no evidance whatsoever throwing piss on folk is always a good idea. Probably had more to do with them being frogs and us winning their race.

State sponsored doping a little more controversial e.g. covering up positive tests

Has anything been proven that they've done out illegal yet?

It's been state funded here rather than state sponsored.

Has anything been proven that they've done out illegal yet?

No

Massive over reaction on here. Certainly there are questions to answer but hardly compares with the Russian team which was rotten to the core.

Has anything been proven that they've done out illegal yet?

No, but let's not stop that from us pretending to be outraged about a sport that nobody really gives a fuck about apart from when the olympics are on

If they drink and drug test car users then the fucking byculists can have the same because from the sounds of it and the way you see them driving around Horwich, they're all smacked off their tits.

The annoying twats.

My niece went out on her bike when Doris was at the peak. Blew her over, luckily she missed traffic but twatted her head on the handlebars, a large cut above her eye and its all black.

Not saying she's smacked of her tits, but increasingly wonder if Lycra affect sensible decision making.

As for British cycling, unless evidence either way is produced then a question mark will remain over the successes.

And that's a right shame, because I find it difficult to believe there's some widespread doping policy etc.

Coe is involved with the IAAF, which suspended Russia. He is not connected with British Cycling in any way (OK, his father was a cyclist, like mine).

UKAD is truly independent and will pursue potential wrongdoing anytime anywhere.

The IOC is weak and chose not to ban Russia, leaving the decision to individual sports bodies to decide.

WADA is independent, but the Russians see it as a USA/Canada clique.

The latest suggestion is that Russia really are trying to put their house in order - only time will tell whether this is so, or just another illusion.

Malc, when you were running around in tight shorts and a vest, were you ever offered performance enhancing drugs?  -  just wonder how long this type of behaious has been around (probably since time began I suppose)

No. But glucose tablets were popular.

The 1904 Olympic marathon is infamous for the winner being on strychnine.
