Keith Hill

Deserves its own thread...

Just read the latest bit of waffle. Sounds like he’s trying to talk himself out of a job.

Nolan had a more successful career? Really? I’d say pretty even.

Dunn played under Allardyce at Blackburn who also tried to sign him for us. He also won an England cap.

Im unconvinced why Nolan would have respect any more than any other random former premiership midfield player. It pretty much comes down to he played for us.

David Dunn premier league appearances 252

Kevin Nolan premier league appearances 401

That's nearly four more seasons of top flight football

Plus Dunn was injury prone and Nolan scored many more goals. Safe to say Nolan the better player.

There aren't many 'random' former premier league players likely to be available. So what if he played for us- doesn't preclude him from being capable.

As for the two blokes having comparable careers; utter bollocks.

Nolan streets ahead, and with several clubs, where he did well.

You're talking with your cock out.

Choice between tweedle dee & tweedle dum ffs

We need a course & distance winner .

DUNNE

1998–2003 Blackburn Rovers 136 (30)
2003–2007 Birmingham City 58 (7)
2007–2015 Blackburn Rovers 180 (20)
2015–2016 Oldham Athletic 8 (0)
Total   382 (57)

NOLAN

1999–2009 Bolton Wanderers 296 (40)
2009–2011 Newcastle United 85 (29)
2011–2015 West Ham United 141 (30)
2016 Leyton Orient 14 (0)
2017–2018 Notts County 0

(0)

Total 536   (99)

I reckon those stats state that Dunne wasn't fit to lace Nolan's boots.

Besides, Nolan never did this

Plus Dunn never played in Europe as far as I can remember

Given neither had a career where you can use trophies as a barometer of success I'd say euro and prem appearances is the next best thing

And Nolan wins easily

Yes, that'll be BSA or Colin Wanker and they aren't coming.

I mean I’d give Nolan the edge but there isn’t much in it. Dunn had injuries so didn’t play as many games. And harmed back end of his career. But he got an England cap.

The point wasn’t really who was the better player. More that both played lots of premiership football. No Blackburn fan would call for Nolan as manager just as no Bolton fan would seriously ask for David Dunn. Not till they were established and proven as managers.

Thats my point. Nolan may be the best choice but let’s not just give him a job cos he used to play for us.

Let's also remember Kevin Davies played for England once, and no one's advocating him for manager. As did Micheal Ricketts, who went on to successfully twat his partner- perhaps he'd be an ideal fit!

Anyway, Richie Wellens getting good reviews and well spoken of at Swindon.

Sam Ricketts continuing his good work at Shrewsbury, following on from similar levels at Wrexham.

Blokes are out there and showing potential especially at the level we're going to be at.

You said their careers were pretty even when clearly they weren't

It was your opening line. So what if Dunn had injuries later on? And bring his England cap into it again

Andy Carroll scored more England goals than Andy Cole. Are you suggesting the former had the better career?

No one is advocating Nolan purely because he's an ex player either.

It certainly may help, he will have an affinity for the place, but given our position, his experience as a player and a coach/manager he ticks boxes.

Aye, so did Michael Ricketts. What point are you trying to make?

How about lets not have either of em anywhere near the club

This summer needs to see quite a few ex players out of the club

Lets not be bringing more in

You might be right. Personally, I don't care if it's an ex player or not. Just the right person.

Being a former employee should neither favour nor preclude someone from the job.

I disagree

Indeed, all this 'former player will know what makes the club tick, what the fans want, galvanize the players blah blah' isn't what it should be about. We need the right person for the task in hand and the situation, regardless of where he's from, who he played for, whether he's a closet Red or whatever. Coyle was a former player who would bring the feel-good factor back.

Indeed. ANY fucker with half a brain knows what the fans want. Fans want wins. Fans don't want tales of how pleased the manager is with the way our team lost but with great play.

Yep. My point. This obsession with fans calling for former players in for no reason other than they used to play for us is nonsense. That was my point with Dunn. Let’s get the best man for the job. The very best candidate. Not just someone to please the fans. Been there done that.

FWIW I'd never form an opinion on a player based purely on appearances, because getting a game is down to impressing one man, not the whole league.  Lets just say Liam Trotter and Luke Murphy.  And it doesnt take into account injuries, so Murphy is probably "better" than Mark Davies.  If Sam Allardyce hadnt been a manager, how many top flight appearances does Nolan get?  I'm not having a go at Nolan, but some players follow managers around, whether BSA was in championship or Prem he took Nolan with him, nobody else was battering down the door to take him to the prem.  Andy O'Brien has probably played more Prem games than Gudni Bergson.

Did Nolan follow Allardyce or did Allardyce want Nolan in his team for his leadership qualities?

Purely on appearances yes, I agree. You have to look further into it though- Nolan had to move on from us as he'd gone stale under the ginger captain charisma.

However, he was appreciated for his leadership qualities; and even if that's by BSA then that's a big plus for me. A good manager knowing a good professional.

As it turns out the oft referred to David Dunn may well turn out to be a decent gaffer too; he's just not as far down the road yet.
