Division 4 Memories

Bit different to the roll call thread. 1987-88, lowest we've ever got and hopefully ever will and I spent all the great times in the 00's being constantly reminded by the older ones I go with about how they were there in the dark days.

For those that were there, how was it following us that season, miserable or memorable? Completely different era of course, but interested to know how it was down in the depths.

Had a look at the results, the 0-4 at Scarborough first away game and win at Wrexham stand out as the worst and best. Home crowds averaging around 4.5k.

Funny seeing Cardiff qualifying for Europe in Div4 by winning the Welsh cup as well.

I'm sure 14 is Paul Hughes, not Paul Booth. He ended up as a copper. Played about 7/8 games if my memory is right......

Definitely Paul Hughes.

Remember the trip to Scarborough well. Our coach broke down at Hartshead Moor Services & one of the lads called the Scarborough police from a phone box to say that if the game wasn't delayed there'd be a riot when we got there. The game obviously wasn't delayed & we arrived late just to see Dave Sutton head into his own net. I remember that the bogs were just a wall to piss against & no trough at the bottom so it was running everywhere. Also remember that as we arrived in the town, the "welcome to Scarborough" was sprayed out & had "Wolves on tour" sprayed next to it.

The rest of the season was largely forgettable apart from Wrexham. That Robbie Savage goal & the Dave Higson commentary of it is legendary.

Remember losing to Torquay at home   over Xmas .Jesus that was hard to take.

Then we went & won 4-0 at Peterborough next bloody game.I'd like to say" I was there ' but I was'nt .Somebody off here might have been though  ? Also the fans favourite 'non picked' player was Stevens.Did'nt do much when he did get picked......what do fans know !

Ps There's only one Robbie Savage & not that plonker off the telly.

Tough times indeed. FFS, made the emigration decision that much easier!

Scarborough. Scarred for life.

Loved it, minibus from the local, the match was poor but the fans were great, proper entertainment.  I remember there being plenty of 'hairdryers' with lads with targets on their coats making the trek there to.  Been to worse

The Torquay game, I think the there was a big Lifeline draw for a villa or something, all members got free tickets so we were in the Lever End for a change, until we could jump the fence back into the Paddock.

Was that the game they lifelined  a house ? It might have been a boxy barrat home but Christ ! I seem to remember a couple on the pitch at half-time being given the keys to the house by Nat .

Lucky buggers I thought !

Not saying a stink or anything but i'm right behind the stantion behind the goal with the only spare 6 or 7 seats around in that end at Wrexham. Still not even been back in the town since that day

Very happy day

Neil Whatmore was signed for us by a businessman who paid his wages. Then Phil Neal never picked him. He was right at the finish then.

We made quite a few signings that Summer before Div 4. From memory: Trevor Morgan, Gary Henshaw, Dean Crombie, John Thomas, Jeff Chandler.

Loads of the more prominent memories already mentioned. One or two more obscure:

A 1-1 Friday night home draw in pissing rain against Darlington when were absolute gash.

A 0-0 away draw at Halifax pretty early in January with the away following becoming mutinous towards Neal because of the negative tactics.

Peter Barnes playing the first 3 minutes of a game at home to Carlisle before getting injured with his first kick of the ball. We won 5-0 anyway.(I've put a few more on You Tube from this season: Bolton 2 Cambridge 2, Bolton 4 Colchester 0, Bolton 2 Peterborough 0, Barnsley 3 Bolton 1 in the cup, Rochdale 2 Bolton 2, Bolton 1 Crewe 1) More to come when I finally get around to it.

No, that was our first season back in Div3. 1983.

Crewe in Div 4. Henshaw put us 1 up early on and I remember thinking we were going to piss the division, until David Platt, THE David Platt, equalised.

Gayle’s lad?

Tony or Dwight?

Before my time but I’ve always been intrigued to know what Ian Stevens was like for us? Had a decent enough career in the lower leagues.

The Wimbledon FA cup final happened a week later. Chances are I was conceived after Wrexham or that.

I thought he was ok to be honest. Me and my mate reckoned he had a double jointed skull as he seemed to wrap his head around the ball. His Barnsley goal was an example.

One of my uni lecturers was a mate of his dad, so I always wanted him to do really well, but it didn't really happen.

He showed a lot of promise in his first 2 or 3 years at the club but never dislodged Trevor Morgan and John Thomas in Div 4. After we'd settled in Div 3 he never dislodged Philliskirk or Reeves. He began to stagnate. Looking back now he ought to have moved on sooner, his career may have taken a different route.

Dave Higson used to constantly sing his praises and call for his selection or introduction from the bench.

Decent player, good athlete, technically alright as well. Couldn’t finish like Caldwell though.

just checked his record after he left us he scored plenty. Think he was often sub for us.

Boxing Day, Hartlepool away, foggy as fuck, 0-0, portacabins as changing rooms iirc

Stevens was pretty quick, came on as sub at Rochdale when we were 2-0 down, came back to draw 2-2. Think he was right wing when he came on but turned the game in our favour

And we didn't get to Wolves, coach turned back for a bit of bother here and there, then heard on the coach radio we were 4 down, one of Miami's specials at the time.

Haha, my coach made it there mate.

It was the Vulcan coach which got the escort back 😂😂

I was in Dunstable after the Orient game,  stayed at Winny's didn't we ?

Stayed at Winnies myself, in the front room with Pigbag, Frank Gal, Ted Harwood (RIP), Terry, dogger etc...

I thought you organised the coach, but did get on the Perth one with Toggy, 2 spare places at 3 quid each 😀, fog on the Tyne all the way.

I must know you then fella......have you got a new alias ?

Pretty sure it was Brixton or Crew 86 who drove the van to Orient.

I vividly remember Winny's mum and dad were staying at his house when we all bowled up 😂

I remember his dad there and his wife, just remember they were proper hospitable seeing that they were putting about 20 lads up. remember the van was a Luton job, defo wernt in those crews. Just a regular Deane lad, Stags, Vulcan, Jimmy Head, Galls, Harwoods and mob.

Yes, they were  very hospitable especially as we turned up unannounced,  fair play to them, top drawer 👍

Oh aye mate. Just meant the match and result.

Was Halifax in the FA Cup during our time in the fourth division?

We played them so many times in that era I've lost track of it all.

One very poor following that season which stands out in my memory was Carlisle away, not even a few hundred there for that one.

Next season, I imagine the ground will be packed when we turn up. Was there the other week, the locals are eagerly awaiting our visit.

Straight out of the station and straight into the main boozing street.

2 big Wetherspoons without a hundred yards of each other.

That was division 3, I think the season we got relegated
