Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted August 25, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted August 25, 2020 Listening to TMS yesterday and aggers reported the arrival of "an enormous grey gull". Reckon it was a herring gull, and you could hear it screeching. Presumably it had come in land a touch prior to the arrival of the storm. Escobarp
Off topic but had a sparrow hawk in the garden on Sunday night. Sat quiet and still in the corner for about 20 mins. Then quick as a flash as some starlings were coming into land in the garden it just nailed one mid air and fucked off. Thing of beauty

Thing of beauty Talking to my mum yesterday. She reminisced over the pair of pigeons that nested in her tree and she fed every day. A sparrow hawk came and twatted one in front of her. When you’re next doing my Mum’s garden ask her about the sparrow hawk that dived down and lifted a squirrel off the top of her greenhouse. As it took it away the squirrel let out a long high pitched squeal that faded off into the distance
frank_spencer
One of my biggest misses of working in The Wellsprings was watching the ravens and falcons scrap it out for ownership of the town hall.

A bit surprising that they can lift a squirrel, as I'd imagine they are much heavier than a bird of a similar size. Used to see a number of bops in Scotland, most of the ones near the farm she identified as goshawks.

I suspect that it was a young one but yeah it took it away Dont know how true it is but I was told that Hawks and the like will pick up mice, voles, etc and take them up to a height before dropping them to kill them

Site Supporter Alf Hartigan Posted August 26, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted August 26, 2020 Just back from Pleasure Beach, highlight of the day was seeing a seagull get smashed by one those planes that go round and round. It fell like it had been shot by a sniper and security had to take it away in a bin bag. Oh, and that new ride Icon is the best roller coaster I've been on. Can't for the life of me remember its name, nor much of it, but I do remember a gull getting twatted against the cockpit of a military aircraft. Sure the story was something about localw not wanting these planes on the base or something. Sounds shite, and probably was- Surely Malc will be able to shed some light on the matter.
