Putin didn't need to. Trump was doing his job for him. Destabilising the West, undermining NATO, casting doubt on the US as a democracy.

Well yeah of course it’s not official policy. He’s applying pressure to the Kremlin.

Not fully heard it, so will take it as described. Yesterday though he was talking and seemed slow, quiet and mumbling, then later far more coherent. 

Maybe the flight had caught up with him.

He's a much more pleasant individual that Trump, and better from a NATO point of view, yet the the same time, unilaterally decided to pull out of Afghanistan, buggering up the nato presence as a whole. Putin may have seen that and felt emboldened, only he knows.

Whatever the case, strong words are needed and hopefully Putin and his men will see it and respect the strength. They will certainly look to test it out.
