February 27, 20233 yr If folk want to listen to an expert on this - I'd suggest Fiona Hill (not sure if peope are aware of her?) Grew up in County Durham but now a US citizen and foreign advisor to a number of presidents. Good listen here - and certainly not partisan. Might buy her new book.

Sorry - only to say she isn't glowing about Trump, but as she's not a politician she does it is a very clear and unemotional way. Which, in many ways, is harder on what he was like as a leader than any sort of emotional outburst. Although she does say, the best prep for working in his administration would have been re-reading Alice in Wonderland just how distanced from reality it was, and the similarities between Brexit and Trump's election and how to un-cover Russia's involvement in the US as a security advisor. Really facinating stuff.

March 8, 20233 yr As the war is still raging and thousands on both sides being killed, I personally do not think Russian or Belarussian tennis players should be allowed at Wimbledon this year yet there are already calls for them to be allowed, I see Sir Andy Murray has had his say the spineless cnut (IMO)
March 8, 20233 yr Just read a book about Stalingrad. Russia are used to winning shitty, drawn out wars against armies with superior weapons. I know times have changed, but mentalities haven’t and they could well end up making big gains by the summer. just hope Ukraine get the hardware they need as that looks like their best chance now

The competitors aren't representing their country (in most forms) and there is an argument that by allowing them to play, shows up Putin's argument that the west is out to get Russia etc. Moreover if the players came out and condemned him, then it might help enlighten the public back in Russia. However, you could forgive a player for not speaking out as there is always the risk they'd slip through an upstairs window into a strawberry and Pimms tent.

March 9, 20233 yr Russia by Antony Beever (one for the Peep Show fans) is currently in my book circulation - know very little baout Russian history and its a good intro, along with Ask a Historian (well worth it - loads odd odd questions answered) and Where The Crawdads Sing which is surpirisingly very good.
