But some of the talk from Trump of late has been shocking. 'Enemy within' and all that. Dangerous words. Quote

Popular Post Bertie Posted October 25, 2024 Popular Post Posted October 25, 2024 It’s unbelievable that half of US voters will be voting for someone who is such an absolute disgrace to humanity. Being voted in once in 2016 was bad enough, but twice?? Deary me. It’s not as though Americans don’t know what they’re going to get with him (corruption, greed, racism, sexism, adoration for dictators and distain for democracy etc etc) so we can only assume this is what they want. A US friend said a few years back that Trump didn’t create these views, but just legitimised them for his “base”. Still why anyone would vote for someone who is clearly so thick is beyond me. The only things he’s good at sadly are projection and gaslighting. The main worry I think though is that he is not the main danger, rather the Project 2025 lunatics lurking in the shadows. Worrying times not just for US democracy but also global stability. Nothing that’s not been said on the previous 123 pages I’m sure, but with their election 2 weeks away I fear the worst based on the latest polls. Only in America. Quote

Given what the last 14 years has brought this country I wouldn't be quite so dismissive of our cousins across the pond. Populism shifted the Overton window, so that what 15-20 years ago would seem outlandish is now the norm, where a person running for president can say outwardly dangerous things and sail close to the wind on facist/dictator style rhetoric and its normalised and even promoted by supporters and certain media channels. I mean, I'm pretty sure Bolty is in full comand of his faculities and not a stupid man but look at how he defends this, moves the target when there is critisims and doesn't see anything wrong with saying things like a benign dictatorship is the best sort of government without irony. Anyone posting stuff like that 15 years ago would have be laughed at quite rightly, but this is where the political frame is currently. One hopes we can start shifting the dial a little bit. Quote

I don’t know you and you don’t know me, although from scrolling previous pages it’s clear what you feel strongly on, and that’s fine of course on a message board with free speech. I don’t think anyone can deny though that between Trump and Harris only one of them is talking about the “enemy within” and using the National Guard against opposition groups. Oh, and so there’s no misunderstanding that’s Trump btw. The one with fascist views. If you’d want to live in such a country then good for you. Quote

Can’t disagree with some of that, but how much was Obama’s legacy is hard to discern? One thing for sure though was the millionaires and billionaires loved DJTs policies. Quote

In general there was good economic growth and low unemployment during his presidency (barring COVID). But it's hard to tell how much if that was down to DT and how much of it was actions from the previous administration paying off. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 Trump is a bit more insular, and willing to protect American industry. Pros and cons of such an approach. Wish we'd stop some poor quality tat entering from the far east. As an aside, this banning of disposable vapes for sale is great. Pity they're not banning the import of them. Quote

What an absolute tool he was. I'm paraphrasing: It will be a disaster, as (60 iirc) % of vapes are disposable, so it will stop people from vaping and push people the other way. No mention that rechargeable ones are available, and are cheaper to use once initial purchase. Common sense says these types are more likely to be used by adults who are long term users. Disposable ones, with "kid" flavours are without doubt more attractive to younger folks, who may not have a regular income and will buy them on a piecemeal basis. Additionally, the number thrown away every day is astronomical, with enough lithium lost over the year to power 5000 electric vehicles. (Might not be bang on with those numbers, as I can't remember all the details, but it's a ridiculously high number). Quote
DazBob Posted October 25, 2024 Posted October 25, 2024 A refillable and rechargeable vape only costs around £20. Refills come in a million diifferent flavours too, even kiddy friendly ones. Kids will just move onto these. Quote

The main point for me- as mentioned in the proposal- is the environmental impact. There are numerous such examples of unnecessary shit being sold. Quote
