Can't speak for your family, but personally we've been affected in various ways by our local lot, and so have the wider community- in ways they won't know about.

My granddad wasn't arsed about gyppos, jews, gays etc. He was mainly into killing British and Americans - mainly Americans.

He was very embittered about having to surrender in The Ardennes.

Good thread this, fair play Rudy. I'd agree with a lot of your points, but still think if you're going to make jokes that push the boundaries then you'll be expecting some people to be offended. The way to combat that is to not give a flying fuck.

Also don't think it's as simple as you're a soft arse wet wipe if there's a joke you find offensive. Everyone has their own context and experiences as to why they might think something crossed a line.

The problem is when folk lose their jobs or gigs because someone was offended by their material.

The Dion Charles situation, whilst different, was handled well. He was criticised, apologised and given the chance to move on. How it should be.

I remember watching Bernard Manning at Lancashire CC around 1997, we had a black lad on our table who as you can imagine got a right load of shit, he took it well and Bernard bought him a pint after. There was a woman on the next table who was offended at the jokes and stormed out (whilst getting a load of shit off BM). There’s to many cockwombles getting offended for others.

I think there's probably a sense that if he apologises for this, why not apologise for everything else in his act. If it's not all fair game, then the whole thing falls apart.

But I think he'd have been much better off if the joke hadn't been so monumentally basic and shit. At least there's some level of observational comedy in the gate joke you mentioned.
