Trying to dilute comedy

I’m fuckin sick of it now.
Got people absolutely frothing at the mouth over Jimmy Carrs gypsy/holocaust joke

I am of the opinion that comedians have the free right to say absolutely anything they like in order to get a laugh

It wasn’t on the bbc, it’s on a paid subscription

Such outrage over a joke. I don’t get it, if you turn a comedian on and he’s not funny or you’re offended then turn it off what is with this cancel culture bollocks

If you haven’t seen it this is the joke

Too many soft cunts in this country

You could continue that joke. It might offend. But not for the reasons you've outlined about underepresentation. I think the real issue here isn't about the joke, it's about the fact it

  • Shit in her cunt.

  • Rudy is bang on. How far will we let this sanitisation (read 'removal of free speech as a basic tenet of democracy') go. Far too many cunts out there frantically searching for something to be offended

People will know my views on cancel culture and wokery so I won't bore on at length about that.

Just think there are very few genuinely funny comedians around any more. Nobody to touch the likes of Les Dawson and Tommy Cooper. Ken Dodd wasn't everybody's cup of tea but he made people laugh for hours on end.

Would Les Dawson get away with his mother in law jokes today? I doubt it. Tommy Cooper could do his clowning but the minute he started a gag with "my wife said to me" Twitter would explode.

Did wokery kill humour or was good comedy dying on its arse anyway? Probably a bit of both.

One thing not in doubt is that wokes are humourless.

Thats not the joke is it.

Its about tapping in to peoples conscious about gypsies.

It makes people reel because its probably true.

He wouldn't have said black because that wouldn't have made any sense.

So he's playing on folk subconsciously feel it's ok to discriminate against gypsies, but they have learned that it's not ok to do that against black people so he won't go there?

Proof of what?

I don’t need to provide proof I’m saying with those quotes that comedy has always had the ability to be edgy and close to the bone. It isn’t something new. If you’re offended fine turn it off, but it doesn’t give anyone the moral high ground to think that a comedian should be cancelled because they find a certain subject offensive

If we start picking and choosing what subjects are ok to talk and make jokes about then where will it stop?

Proof of your argument.

still waiting (3rd time) Bradford City fire joke.....people right to react and get on stage and chin him ?

Your argument last night swerved from 'context' and explained how Bill Burr had context to his Hitler joke. But now all jokes/humour are ok. Which is it ?

Right I’ll put it as simply as I can

You are allowed to say what you want there’s no laws in comedy. People may be offended and that’s ok.
The comedian may have to live with the consequences and again that’s ok

If one person or one group of people are offended that then doesn’t give politicians and the Twitter fan base the power to try to cancel that comedian because THEY are offended

It doesn’t give the power to decide what is offensive and what isn’t offensive and then to manage and dilute comedy. Somebody will always be offended.

If someone wants to give Chubby Brown a crack for his Bradford joke then they can, but that doesn’t mean anyone can decide what he says

Fundamentally correct.

Market forces will decide his fate.

So whatever the context offence is now ok. That is not quite what you were saying. Previously you said if you were offended you did not get the context, which what I was disagreeing with.

In terms of cancelling someone not sure what it means, imagine some shows Jimmy Carr is involved in might consider his role. Some people might choose not to go to his shows. Netflix may decide not to show his special. Equally some people might decide to go to his shows. Daresay Netflix will base their decision on viewer figures. Whatever our personal views on a subject the decision will be driven by £££. Which maybe means he will pay less tax. 😂😎

I get it just do not agree. And quoting comedians as your proof does not work.

@Rudy is now saying it is ok to be offended, whereas earlier argument was if you are offended you are missing the point. Subtle change in point. I repeat as it has not been answered Chubby Brown making a joke about the fire at Bradford is always going to be offensive to a lot of people in the audience even if they have paid money to go and see a comedian well known for the edge to his act.

I think the Bradford fire joke, unless told at a fund-raiser for victims, would still have raised a laugh. If you pay to go watching Chubby Brown you really are expecting to be shocked. Bloody hell, he’s made a comfortable living making fun of anything and everything. His normal audiences lap up his poor taste.

A mate of mine was bar manager at a Catholic Club in Rochdale during Chubby’s early days.
Chubby turned up on Saturday afternoon to set up his PA and have a relax. He asked my mate if there was anything happening locally which would strike a chord with the locals.

“Nothing much,” my mate told him. “Although we did get our charity raffle prizes stolen a few weeks ago when someone sneaked through the fire exit.”

Chubby told him that was the type of stuff he needed.

Later that evening, to a packed audience, the MC announced, “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE GIVE A WARM ROCHDALE WELCOME TO MISTER ROY “CHUBBY”BROWN!”

He bounded onto the stage, looked at the back wall where a crucifix and Jesus hung, and said, “I see you got the bastard who nicked your raffle prizes!”

Offensive? That entirely depends on your religious outlook on life. I personally think it’s funny but the audience booed him off stage.

Know your audience, I guess.

if you're going to a jimmy carr gig or watching him on netflix, you kow what you're gonna get, simply dont buy a ticket or watch if you're a snowflake

same if you watch peter, stay away if you're offended by garlicbread jokes

what a bunch of fannys

Theres a bit in jimmy carr podcast about a US comic making a joke fresh after 9/11 in New York. Didnt go down too well but the firemen at the back loved it.

I think I’d draw the line at mercilessly taking the piss out of folk who can’t defend themselves.

Gypsies, gingers, darkies, Whiteys, Brexit gammons, the Scot’s, the English, Mounts, the French, terrorists etc etc …. As entities in their own right they are able to give some back if they so choose so fuck it, let loose.

Disabled kids, folk with special needs is not ok. That’s just bullying and not funny or acceptable.

I think Harvey Price gets a fair amount of shit thrown at him and I just don’t get that. At all.

Dunno the lyric, 'But sometimes, I'd feel more fufilled, making Christmas cards with the mentally ill.'' always raises a smile.

They would. It's a coping mechanism.

Making jokes about firemen never helped me pull.

Why is everyone defending gypsies anyway.

Most despicable feral bunch of scum fuckers on these shores.

Not condoning the mass murder of them btw.

(Either is JC for that matter :) )

There was a programme on last night, 60 days with the gypsies.
some bloke going around towing a caravan joining camps to see how they live.

got welcomed by a couple who helped him and let him go with them while they were mythering folk for work etc

others threatened to twat him soon as he showed up and shove his camera up his arse

Some took him hunting with catapults and cooked and ate the squirrels and pigeons they killed

Some broke into his caravan

another jumped on his car roof, and shit onto his widescreen…

feral & lawless , or at least law as we know it, live by their own rules

Ed Stafford.

I've watched a few of his programmes.

Absolutely.

Pandering to this set of pariahs is the norm in this country. Far too much offered them in return for their antisocial, criminal, non-contributory ways.

No doubt there will be a few genuine ones that live their wandering life without impacting negatively everywhere they go.

Would imagine they're a small minority though.

Wasnt going to comment on this but.

Lived amongst a Roma/English Gypsy family for the past 20yrs of my life. Wife lived in a caravan (on her grandparents land) in her early years. None of her close family travel anymore but work in the stereotypical jobs building game, selling caravans etc.

Many of them have lauged at some of Jimmy Carr's jokes about Gypsies (What's the difference between a riot and a Gypsy wedding? You can't buy a gate at a riot) this one has crossed the line. If he wouldn't say jokes about Jewish/slavic/disabled people being slaughtered being a good thing then he shouldn't say them about Gypsies.

If he'd come out and said "I know I sail close to the wind with my jokes and this time I've overstepped the mark and I'm sorry" I could see it all going away rather quickly.
