It was a stupid remark but they were not going to release her anyway until the debt was repaid.

David Miliband was FS when the court appeal was turned down; Hague, Hammond, Johnson, Hunt and Raab didn't get a result. Truss (allegedly) made it her number one priority.

British nationals get released and yet...

One of the reasons why we didn't pay it for so long is because the US position of not paying for hostages, and we don't want to piss them off because of our wonderfully one way special relationship. Difficult for all FS.

But this had gone to far in public opinion in the UK (so the fact it was high profile did help both UK hostages) most people didnt understand the debt issue.

Anyway, good old Johnson needed it cleared up as well given some of his bumblings, and it now plays well at a time everyone is focused on Ukraine.
