The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

There's houses for sale in Bolton that I'd say are worth 50k, on the market at over 150k.

The In laws are getting £650 for an ex council house off plodder lane, same style house across the rd has just had a let agreed on it for £850. Another has just gone for the same price on Kenyon way in Little Hulton. Those who know LH know how bad Kenyon way is!

Used to be... did a job there a few months ago and seemed very different

If it's one of the grimmest part of L/H, then fucking hell, it must be grim

Its not as notorious as it once was, but yeah its grim as fuck in parts. i am trapped in LH; i've got 8 years left on my mortgage then i intend to disappear...

i'm now having to opt out of my pension for a bit- the amount of shite thats happened to us since the pandemic has wiped any real savings i had. if we got the house up to speed and sold tomorrow, we would walk away with 100k in our pocket; but as the wife was made redundant we cant tap in to that or restructure. i am personally earning more at the minute than i have before, but i simply cant afford to have essential repairs completed.

with regards to those not working feeling the pinch, my neighbour is his partners 'carer' (she screams at her five kids all day). he pays 1k a month for verisure to keep his pink poodle and numerous pugs safe. he has had the council in redecorating and improving, and must have a decent account at Axfords for all the shit he has delivered to transfer his garden.

they know how to play the system, and that is what grates; i do all i can to provide as a good life as i can for three kids, yet there are some with no intention of doing so seemingly better off than me.

I’ve got a cousin, barely worked a day in her life, she’s 48 now. She’s on disability benefit and any other hand out a sponge can soak up.

Some scroat as she called them, tried breaking into her car the other day. Only a 12 month old Audi Sports car.
Now to say her disability is having a fucked back, I can’t imagine they are the easiest cars for fully mobile people to get in and out of

The boss has an Audi TT and we had to go somewhere local on a visit today. I'm 5'9" and 59. I got my arse on the seat then  couldn't manoeuvre my head into the fucking thing. I gave up and drove myself. How anybody with a bad back can get in one of those things is beyond me.

Don't worry about it. The PM and Chancellor are all over it.

eye-watering bills!

Cap rose by 54% in April, so 81% in October and another 19% on top in January takes a £100/month direct debit to £332/month, so a 232% rise in 9 months.

Just let that sink in.

Meanwhile this rudderless shitshow of a government are all on holiday.

Red hot summers are usually followed by ice cold winters....

Shit will hit the fan if we get a beast from the east again this year.

Just having spoken to my Mrs - as I say we earn decent money but its a concern for us, god knows what people are going to do, and it's not just those on the breadline.

I can't quite fathom that there isn't serious talks at the heart of government about this. But no, we have another leadership campaign, parts of the government are simply not functioning.

Sod Labour or Tory or Lib Dem or SNP or whoever. We are sleepwalking into a disaster.

I earn a decent wage and I am struggling to find the extra 200 quid a month that my dd has gone up by.  It was actually over £400 a month till I asked British Gas to reduce it to £305.  Food bill is about £40 a week dearer and my mortgage fixed rate ends in November.

I will manage, I think/hope but how folk earning a lower wage will survive is beyond me.

Renting is dead money but I'm glad I don't have a fixed rate mortagage ending and our landlord owns the house outright. They comitted to freezing the rent for 18 months.

Because I don't commute anymore that has helped move that money into the bills, but that's the pension pot paused again.

And French bills have risen by 4%.

But venture capitalists and shareholders are raking it in from our privatised system, so all's good.

Mrs has just done £200 in about 45 minutes in school uniform shop. Shes not even got going on the new bags and shoes.

How do folk on the breadline manage with shit like that.

The rise in wholesale prices affects every country.

France may choose not to pass the full cost of that onto people immediately, but sooner or later they will have to pay off the debt generated.

It may be of significant benefit to them that they have a lot of nuclear energy production, which is clearly not affected by gas price rises.

We don't, and are stuck with gas for some time as we continue our transition away from it.

Interesting little piece here.

Every country has difficulties to endure.

Lots of secondary schools do a swap if the kids have just grown out of stuff I think. Middle one needs a new games kit though and at their school they have to have their initials on them like a bloody manager! Rip off and lots of parents complaining about it, although she's off at her friends house today with its outdoor and indoor pools, spa and whatever the hell else. So some don't care.

Primary school - can't you just get that stuff in supermarkets nowadays? Little one's stuff is usually quite reasonable. Last year of that though!

Well I've just had a Cadburys Curlywurly for the first time in about over 40 years, OMG they must be less than half the size.

Cost of living for ya🙄

Youngest is at Sixth Form, but it's a Grammar school, so still has a uniform.

They're trying to combat the rising prices by dropping the insistence of an official school jumper with embroidered logo and pupils can now wear a plain navy, grey or black jumper of sweatshirt.
