Quitting the booze

Allen Carr (not the goofy “comedian”) writes books about how to stop drinking and/or smoking.

My sister read it a few years back and, whilst she want a full on alky, was overdoing the booze.

After reading this book, she hasn’t touched a drop since. Not one.

So, as a challenge, I said I’d read the book and prove that this kind of thing doesn’t really work and that she was just ready to stop anyway.

about 2 weeks ago, I reached just over the halfway point. Since then, I’ve probably had 2 pints and one glass of wine, none of which I particularly enjoyed.

I’m annoyed for several reasons:

* I adore a drink, and I feel the pleasure has been stolen from me

* My sister was right and I was wrong about the book

* I feel somehow invaded by this author who I never invited into my life in the first place.

* I want a beer, but don’t want a beer. It’s fucking WEIRD.

I need help in getting back on the horse.

Im not going to preach, but if you really want to kick the booze (he does fags as well), then I’m here to tell you, brothers and sisters, that this fucker works.

Its very nice, either way

Just want the dark Budvar now

😊 If you like it that’s all that matters. I said during lockdown that the Staropramen sold at Sainsburys was brewed in the U.K. Their own Czech Lager was brewed at the Staropramen brewery in Prague. It was excellent. They don’t sell it now though.🤷‍♂️

The real deal at about 2 per 500ml

Erdinger now

Kozel dark beer is recommended by my wife. It’s the only beer she drinks over there.👍

I massively lost my shit when I found out they’d stopped selling that. You mentioned it and it was delicious. Proper tackle.

Owt brewed here masquerading as the real deal is nothing of the sort.

I remember our conversations on it at the time. It does seem strange that wine for example, is clearly marked where it originated from but beer not so. Whether it’s Czech, Italian or wherever. Seems Casino’s is legit though. Always check the label. 👍

Mozza’s?

I like how a thread on stopping drinking has evolved into talking best place to buy alcohol.

Lovely stuff.

Doing a month off the ale. Been hitting it way too hard, different stuff on etc.

Got a bit of blank month now. First step, getting past the bay horse on the way home from work today :D

I managed quite comfortably to do 31st May up until one pint of Kingfisher with a curry on Wednesday.

Went for a meal last night in Llandudno but was so parched from 3 hours in the car that I ended up having 3 pints of lager shandy and that was me done (being full of food helped).

Will be interesting to see how long I last on a day session in Conwy today though. And then my plan is that I won’t be drinking again until the first away day next season so potentially another full month.

See all I can think about today is beer :(

I’ve been doing well staying almost off the beer for several months with the odd binge session thrown in, but I’m taking some time off work for a few weeks and I’ve had a drink every night this week whereas I wouldn’t drink on a school night.

Time to restart and not drink Sunday to Friday.

barely drank at home since March

arrival of new child, busy at work and other halfs insistence I don't get on it whilst she needs help with feeding etc during the night etc all mean I'm barey having a drink

don't mind so much, feel better for it

had a couple of nights on it and  found I would rather not have the next day

still miss it

when I do get back into it I think the number of cans of an evening will reduce and will probably start later on in the evening

save getting pissed for when I go out

my spreadsheet that logs money spent on booze to drink at home tells me

2020 - £8239
2021 - £5673
2022 - £3710
2023 - £614

but to be honest, it does feel boring

In a skip in Wakefield

Wife tells me I staggered to the shop for more ale last night wearing sliders, definite wake up call that.

It really is.

Always wear sensible shoes when going for more ale.

You don't want to drop it on the way home.

Poor planning

Thats what it is

I topped up Saturday morning

Prob got enough for 3 weeks

I don't drink at home, never have. When I used to pay in pubs with cash I never looked at how much I'd gone through, but now I'm debt free and the bank trust me with a contactless card my beer outlay had become all too obvious I'm afraid. There are pages and pages of pub names and amounts. I've even started paying for multiple pints so that there are less entries.

I always drink more in the summer, like most, and tell myself that in the winter, if I can just get home, I won't come out for a pint. I now find I'm using the excuse that by the time winter comes, I'll have packed work in.
