If I was a player and going into training tomorrow and was used to either not giving it my best or not as fit as I should be I would be crapping myself. This man is not to be messed with, like Allardyce and Rioch before him (remember why Rioch got sacked from Torquay). Coyle and Freedman are too nice, the worst thing that they could do to a player was not pick them or not talk to them, either way they cannot be hurt, they still get paid and can run their contract down. However, I think that this new fella will change this.

I was at a charity function last night and spoke to Crewe's Manager, he said that Clayton is a good player and the money that we have shelled out for him he should be pushing for the first team. Although, others who know him have said the Championship is at this stage a big step for him. Also said some interesting things about the amount of games teams play and how easy it is to go on a bad run and how hard it is to get out of one. He also said that after 3 years at Crewe he was the 12th longest serving manager in the football leauge and clubs sack managers too quickly.

I know lots of Crewe fans and they all think the Championship is a big step up for him. If he is one for the future we need someone right now. Also, will he just be another player in the way of Wilkinson, Clough, Illiev and Thomas. Although he might be considered a better prospect than these, time will tell I suppose.

I honestly thought that last nights performance wasn't too bad. The biggest fault was that we just do not have enough shots on goal whereas Port Vale were shooting in sight. Our possession in midfield was good and we knocked it around nicely. However, for all our possession at one nil the opposition are always in the game. When Hall, Danns and Beckford came on, in that space of three or four minutes we had three shots at goal (one from each player) and we scored with one of them. The squad is looking strong with genuine competition for places, except upfront which we are trying to rectify. So I am genuinely looking forward to the new season!

The game is not about systems it is about players and those players knowing their roles and how they fit in with the organisation of the team. For a so called attacking team with a manager known for his attacking mentality we create very few chances and do not score enough goals. We seem to go on the field with no apparent plan except to play with a high tempo and to find a white shirt as quickly as possible this leads to us giving the ball way too frequently. The two attackers yesterday did not play as a partnership and did not keep close to each other therfore there was no up front link play. The two centre mids were swamped and could not retain the ball therfore cutting the supply off to our two excellent wide men, who incidentaly are not encouraged to come inside or change wings leaving them virtual passengers. Therefore our defence is placed under enormous pressure and eventually will concede goals. The central defenders are encouraged to play the ball out to midfield, but who to? The midfielders are already under severe pressure and the amount of times possession was lost here was outrageous and places the defence under even more pressure.. I think you could put the best two central defenders in the premier leauge under this system and they would struggle to succeed. We have been seeing these tactics far too long now and quite clearly they do not work, teams can negate our ball players by flooding the midfield and working hard and since the Stoke semi final under this management we have lost far too may games. For example recently a video has been added to the site from 1976, the Oldham match. Look at the side this was a very attacking formation, two wingers Thompson and Morgan, two forwards and goals supplied throughout the side. Even taking into account the Allardyce and Rioch area, for 3 to 4 years this team played fantastic football. In Roy Greaves we had the link man from defence to midfield (this team does not have one and I don't think the manager even wants to play one) we had two strikers in this case Jones and Whatmore working hard and as a pair, Reid was a grafter with a touch of class, Jones and Allardyce scored a lot of goals fron centre-half, and this made for a well organised team with a simple playing method who played fantastic football and won a lot of games. I quite simply do not see this from our team, since Allardyce left we have had too many managers, but Mr Coyle is way out of his depth and he ether needs to go or needs experineced help, this needs to happen quickly. With ten games to go last season looking at our fixtures, when compared to QPR and Wigan, he should have been able to pick a team and formation that should have enabled us to stay up. But with his stubbourness and tactical ineptitude manged to fritter a decades hard work. I find this hard to forgive!!

Went to Plymouth on the same coach, there was a bit of trouble in the ground and a few of us were thrown out along with a few Plymouth lads, the trouble kicked off again outside. Outside the ground there were football pitches with corner flags still on. I turned roung and saw a plymouth lad being hit full in the face with one. What a mess.

I worked with DH for many years at Aerospace and I feel saddened by his demise. And would like to add my own story to the collection. It was a horrible, wet and cold night at the old Burnden. Some mates and myself were watching a very average reserve match. So at half time we were walking out and going to the pub. Dave came rushing up the stairs murmuring "What score is it lads? The missus said if I came tonight she would divorce me, so I compromised and came at half-time!!!" RIP
