Challengers next season?

Yes and that’s probably why we’re second favourites and the likes of Reading and Wiggin aren’t? Both are going to have to dispose of their better players and focus on youth and sustainability as well of course starting on minus points. Whilst we should arguably be stronger all round, despite the loss of Traff and Bradley, neither of those, nor Blackpool will be even as strong so whilst they may scrape top 6 I don’t see them challenging for the automatics. None of the teams coming up look a major threat so that’s nearly half our competition written off already. Out of what’s left no more than 4 or 5 could really be considered serious challengers if IE does the business strengthening which I’m confident he will. So I actually believe the bookies have it spot on with ourselves and Derby fighting for the No1 and 2 positions.

Read this the other day. Can certainly see where we would fit in to quite a few of the things mentioned in terms of loan goalkeepers etc

Feel sorry for Hutchison as he was genuinely impressive on loan at Colls but he’s effectively lost a season or more of his development playing in the low intensity of the B team when in reality he needed a season of being knocked about in the Conference North

Sadly our no.2 last season was a real no.2, but a fake goalkeeper.

'Hutch'

Neck on block, wont see next june with us

Why would you be happy to see an untried kid as our keeper for 20 (+) games?

Like most back up keepers, he probably won't even make the bench anyway so why put the budget into a second keeper when it's needed elsewhere?

Good feature that Matt and what a shame for young promising keepers. I personally feel Traff is going to be disappointed at some time by City as I really can’t see him ever breaking through into their first team with the money they can spend bringing in ready made players. Depending on where he goes next I still feel he’d have been better having another year here with us. It’s tough for outfield players but it must be super tough for keeers.

He had played 11 From memory when signed.

You know I’m not IE’s biggest fan but that signing was some piece of business. I’d alway take the gamble on the upcoming lad than a safe pair of hands.

I just dont think our kid will get near making it

On the wider point, i think evatt will have to have a footballer in goal

Theres more and more of those available now

Like gilkes, he was experienced as a saver of shots...at that time most experienced keepers were just that...keepers

Theres now plenty keepers mid 20s who have grown up playing evatts way

I’m genuinely worried as I think we live and die with the keeper choice how we play. Needs to get this one bang on.

From memory there wasn’t many goalkeepers in our league who played it about, I might be on my own here but I think it will be hard finding one to play evatts way unless he ditches that style (hopefully)

I think it’s incredibly stupid in L1. Additional pressure not needed

He won’t ditch it, no chance.

I prefer keepers who can keep the ball out the net rather than footballers. That's the 1st requirement for me. Work on kicking/passing later if needs be

I agree.

Every game I’m panicking like fuck when play it out.

Not good for the ticker!!!!!

I'm happy for us to play out from the back, but it needs to be quick, sharp, crisp passes with the aim of getting forward quickly. The 10-pass routine across the back and to the keeper just invites pressure.

Exactly

Plenty competent keepers who arent scared of theball now

I shake my head at bolton fans who are still gerritup merchants

Not saying hoof it

Traf is right we need to move it quicker

It isn’t about not being scared of the ball but putting your keeper under unnecessary pressure which we did on many occasions isn’t right

I’m with you on this.

There’s a parallel with the cricket debate on the other thread.

If it’s tweaking something to make it better, I’m ok with that.

Passing it quicker and swiftly getting it to the forwards is perfection - but not always an option, which is why sometimes it has to come backwards, sideways and build slower.

But if the ask is to change our methods, philosophy and the way we play then people are going to be very disappointed - it’s not happening.

You are going to have to come up with a way of dealing with your anxiety if it makes you feel nervous playing out from the keeper.

You don’t rip up the blueprint, especially when it’s been part of our progression over the last 3 seasons. Playing out from the keeper, retaining possession and building through the defence has been, and will continue to be, part of our evolution.

It’s no coincidence either that the good sides who’ve left this division recently didn’t play slow football at the back it was done with tempo and urgency

also thinking back to our L2 campaign Gilkes didn’t mess around half as much as the last 2 seasons

Not saying rip the blueprint up but let’s not become so predictable eh? teams had us worked out early season, I know there’s much love for city on here but think some have been watching too much of them😀it’s L1 football

It needs to be more give and go than sideways and backwards.

If the keeper rolls/passes to the full back, the FB's next move should be a pass to the CB or into midfield and then he gets on his bike for the return and we're in their half.

It shouldn't be keeper to Santos to Johnston back to Santos back to keeper back to Johnston by which time we've four players in our own box with three opponents chasing. Then we have to bang it long and we've no height further forward and it comes back at us.

All down to having a midfielder that can turn, face and create. We are desperate for a ball carrier.
