Was a bit weird hearing Evatt on Radio Manchester post-match, gushing over meeting Phil Brown for the first time, but Brown was keen to point out that playing JDB means Charles dropping deeper and that the two best players don’t always make the partne

It’s examples like this (plus a multitude of other insight and analysis perspectives that we aren’t privy too) we have to be open minded about and not just simply throw out comments like “I don’t understand why Evatt blah blah blah”

Feels great to be routinely smashing teams that we should be smashing at the moment.

Yes I agree with that.  For one its not long since we were struggling to beat, or were losing to, teams of Harrogate's standing.  And secondly I like the fact that if we score a goal or 2, we still want to get a 3rd and 4th, because for years we always took the foot off the gas once it got to 2, borne out by the fact that we went about 10 years without anyone getting a hat-trick.

I would start vic and Jerome against vale see if they can step up to the plate then evatt can pick the inform striker to partner Charles at Pompey and which two for the bench

It will be Vic, I don't think "form" is a factor, as we've seen already.  It has to be down to either or both of fitness and style of play.  Some say Vic closes down more, can't say I've noticed it but there's a lot I don't notice, but the qualities Vic brings to the table is what IE paid money for, and the others do their thing for the last 25 minutes or whatever.

True, though remember to factor in the extra subs. So often players on 2 goals are taken off with 30m+ to go.

I agree, great confidence booster.

I’d take it a step further and say cup games (more EFL trophy than FA Cup obviously!) have been part of our development & progression.

Wembley needs no explanation.

They’ve kick-started or maintained good runs of league form

Lots of players have made their way into the first team after good performances.

For example Thomasson & Sheehan last autumn used these games as a platform to get in the league team.

This season they’ve been the perfect platform for JDB to get match fit and to a point now where I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start

And the same goes for Forrester, Morley, Dan and anyone else on the periphery. Of course there’s no direct correlation between cup games and league games. But what is pretty clear to me is that all players above have come into league games recently and looked more than comfortable, would they if they hadn’t had the cup games to maintain/improve fitness and form in a competitive cup situation?

I get that, but there has to be a level of performance.  Browny was co-commentating on the Wycombe game and I lost count of the number of times he was getting really frustrated that the ball wasn't sticking when it went upto Vic (and Charles), putting us under constant pressure that eventually resulted in the equaliser.  He kept saying we weren't going to get out of our half until the forwards could retain some possession.  I know I don't understand all the tactical stuff like the pro's do, and I respect them for that, but general standard of play has to be no.1, with tactics/positional play following (as long as we're not talking square pegs in round holes like Dapo/Sadlier at left back etc).

True, but that would presumably be the case for any team in all 4 divisions.  Hat-tricks are scored every week up and down the country and it was never us that had that player that grabbed the match ball.  We still haven't seen a hat-trick in the league at home since Joe Mason 9 years ago have we?

Dwight Gayle has scored 5 hat-tricks in the EFL, so his manager wasn't subbing him after 2 😀

All fair points, cup games do have a role to play in getting players integrated, CMG being the latest today, had a good game without ever quite threatening to turn it into a great performance.

As would anyone. That is somewhat immaterial though.

He's a demanding figure, and has been a critical of the team today- a manager doesn't do that for effect when they've just won 5-1.

It's the kind of game we'd have won 2-0 previously, where we're clearly superior but for whatever reason don't push on. Who knows how far this current form could take us. Could easily be 3rd and 4th round of FA cup, late stages of pizza and still up around the automatic promotion places. A season for the ages.

Reet Job done.

Next round forget all this premier awayday bollocks. Gimme the lowest ranked team at the Reebok all the way to the final . Cheers muchly.

Steady on, if we get to the semi final we'll have to rearrange our promotion party v Port Vale!  I'll take an honourable defeat in the 3rd or 4th round at Spurs or Man U with 8k Bolton fans having a good day out.

Harrogate were poor, and thought we were OK for the first 70 minutes, but agree with IE, plenty of room for improvement.

Forrester's distribution was poor aside from setting up Bod's first, Jones never looked with his pass across the box, but I think he expected Morley to be in a better position.  Morley was OK in their half but as the holding midfielder he wasn't anywhere near as good as George or Sheehan at beating the press, too often just rolled it back to Santos or Baxter.  Bright start from Randall but then went AWOL. Some bright moments from Gomes but will need to be better to get ahead of Maghoma.
