I’m not too sure. I saw us get a few wins (including the back-to-back away wins) and draws, when Man Utd were the absolute top dogs in the noughties. One thing that struck me was the respect Ferg

They considered us a rival that fucking night. 3-0 . One of the abiding memories I'll go to my grave with. If only someone could somehow unearth some footage, I'd reward them handsomely in my will.

I was at that game but incredibly young. I just recall seeing the United fans on the Manny Road half of the Embankment which was usually for home fans and the BWFC fans on the away bit next to the Burnden Paddock. Think it was quite a foggy night and unless anyone tells me different there was (unusually) no trouble. Which cannot have been said about our previous game v them in 74/5 (Div 2) or the following season in 79/80. From what everyone has said 3-0 didn't flatter us and Worthy took the piss out of Gordon McQueen all night.

Said to some mates the other day that I'm just gutted this wasn't happening when we were at school.

Couldn't care less now though, they're like Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal now, not arsed if they win, amused when they fuck it up

I don't like City, but I fucking hate Wigan

Every Utd fan I've ever known has never considered us a rival and I've known quite a lot living in Manchester and Stockport

Loved it when we beat them in the Premiership, couldn't give a stuff now. Never see a Utd shirt even in Kent anymore which used to happen a lot.

Hated them with a passion in the sixties seventies & eighties & ok the nineties & weirdly not quite as much when we actually played them in the Prem.

Their demise has coincided with me becoming an owd Cnut , so I am more indifferent than I was but still get a buzz every time they get turned over.

City fans (I only know a couple of long suffering types) have become pretenders to their plastic fan throne  , though I still can’t get too bothered about them .Nice when they fuck it up but not going to compete with the rags in the contempt stakes.

One observation about our youth .I used to take my grandson playing under nines footy , & as is par their personal footy strips were all Liverpool , City , Arsenal etc.

My grandson asked me to take him to the Wanderers about three years ago quite surprised me (in a good way) Anyway it turns out all the lads he played footy with in the under nines ALL had season tickets for BWFC.

Heartwarming stuff !
He just laughs at the rags.

Thing that amuses me most about city given how much they used to hate everything about Utds success including glory hunters

Whenever they ring up 606 or whatever

They have to tell us not only are they are city fan but that they're life long and how long they've had a season ticket

Because they know that's what they've become

I don't particularly hate United, but I used to hate the fact that every cup they won added another few hundred thousand to their "fanbase" in the UK and worldwide, who effectively are lost to the game because 99.9% of them will never attend football matches regularly, they are TV/online fans of the game only.

The significance of them continuing to be crap is played out for me by the fact that my 6 year old grandson is a football obsessive (he'll watch any game on TV).  His Mum is a Bolton S/T holder, his Dad is a Man U fan that goes a couple of times a season (not knocking him, great bloke).  My grandson comes to most Bolton games and currently has no reason to be swayed towards Man U, because he doesn't see them winning when his Dad puts them on TV.  If for arguments sake we are losing every week and United are successful, its only going to go one way.

And I bet that scenario is played out up and down the country both for Bolton/United households and AN Other FC/United households.  The worse United are the better it is for Bolton and for every club, the less fans they have the more the support is shared around, and when they support other clubs they can actually attend games.

Kind of

But a lot will surely just gravitate toward gloryhunting City/Liverpool instead

That is heartwarming.

One thing I always loved about our town, compared to say Bury, Blackpool or Wigan, is the amount of Wanderers shirts you'd see on the populace, even when we were at our lowest ebb.  Go into those other towns and you'd see more Utd & Liverpool tops.

Well yes, my 6 year old grand daughter's Dad is a huge Liverpool fan, and of course she's got a full Liverpool kit even though she has no interest whatsoever.

She doesn't even realise Bolton have a team, its all about LFC.

But generally, Man U are more of a threat to kids from the Bolton area supporting another team with their geographical proximity etc.

Somehow City don't feel like much of a threat to our fanbase, I've never known any City fans other than Mancs (or their relations), I'm sure they exist, but they definitely don't have the pull of United.  Conclusion being, long may United struggle!  The other Prem teams can do what they want.

I think the purple nose comment rather disrespectful, he's been a great manager , always respectful to the wanderers, turned up a nat's funeral , a mate of big Sam , does a lot of charitable work and a people person .

You have to admit too that his team's played good football.

To be honest I not that bothered about United or any other football team . All I care about is the wanderers. I don't hate other teams , it's not worth venting your anger. We are all supporters of football , we just support teams who wear different coloured shirts .

I wish I could post the newspaper cuttings of their fans pelting our Cup winning open topped bus with bricks, bottles and clods of earth in 1958. My photobucket account has been fucked for a while now.

Never forget, never forgive.

This is why my uncle hates them. He got me into bolton. He told me these tales and many more. He would say we are Bolton effing Wanderers (he wouldn't swear in front of his nephew) busby used to send buses to burnden to take the fans who couldn't get in to watch man u instead. I don't know if this is true but I have no reason to doubt him

For balance

As I’ve said on here years ago my Dad hated them with a vitriol. Nowt to do with that incident. He was highly critical of the route the bus took which makes sense looking back. Louis crooked bent bastard fucking arsehole cunt Edwards welched on a business deal that nearly sent my Dad and his business under in later years. When he had his van and truck hire business in Higher Broughton I’d go in with him on a Saturday morning and fuck around playing around in the artic wagons. Numerous times he took a route in past Old Trafford pointing at the place saying to me always remember that place was built on bent money. He’d me a gem on this thread

The full extent of this slimy cunts dealings never came to light. As bent as they come.

Remember my Granddad telling me the same. He hated them from that day on. I'm in the hated them with a burning passion when I was a younger man, just amused by their bad form now. I always put this down to moving to Australia and not dealing with it on the daily but you seem to be keeping the feeling.

When they were winning everything they had a hateable manager and many players that made me apoplectic at the mere sight of them plus that twat Eamon Holmes talking about them every bastard morning on the tele. Now I couldn't pick the manager out of a line up and doubt I could name more than half of the first team.

The buses bit is true because when Jimmy Armfield became Bolton manager he put a stop to it. They actually used to park coaches on the Burnden forecourt to pick up rags fans. Armfield said no more.

TBF it's not quite as severe now. Probably not having to see it, hear it, loathe it every fucking day.

I only want them to crash and burn now playing wise now rather than be obliterated. Then again.........................................:D

Finished work at lunchtime as we always did the last day before Christmas. Kicked out of the pub at 3, I wandered around town wondering if the match would be on as there was some doubt. Met a Bobby friend of mine in the town hall square and he said they had been told it would go ahead. Brilliant night.
We were well and truly back!
