AFTER finishing three successive seasons in the top eight of arguably the most demanding domestic league in the world, one would assume that the Wanderers are ready for yet another season of prosperity in the Barclays Premiership. Even though the majority of diehards are anticipating a campaign full of optimism, it has saddened manager Sam Allardyce that a number of fans have a pessimistic view of the Club's progress especially the way the season ended at the Reebok Stadium last term. "I get really dissatisfied with people saying Bolton Wanderers had a disappointing end to last season," said a disgruntled Allardyce. "Those that express that opinion are ignorant and na??ve.When you are competing for three years with Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool and you are the only Club to finish in the top eight with those other four, I can't believe that anyone would breathe a word of negativity. This Club has never had it so good and it disappoints me when I hear people knocking us. "Considering we only lost three games at home in all competitions - two of which were to the Champions and runners up - it astounds me. Negative thoughts and comments are very unhelpful. "I am proud to be part of an era where we are creating history for the Club.When you consider the size and strengthen of the squad and the lack of financial power compared to other clubs in the competition, achieving a top eight finish in the past three years is a monumental effort. It is equivalent to say Liverpool winning the Champions League. We should never lose sight of how far we have come and I'm determined to take us on with ambition and enthusiasm. Pound-for-pound we are the best team in the Premier League." The Bolton boss has returned to the Club's training ground after a scouting mission on the continent and is determined to do all in his powers to give the fans hope and glory and embark on taking the team back into Europe. He added: "We will building next year's squad to hopefully re-enter the European dream again. If I can attract the right mix of players we can achieve European qualification again. "The priority is to find the right quality to improve the ability of the squad.The squad is on the thin side, but I won't compromise on quality. "It is difficult to sign good players. It's easy to sign bad ones and that is something I want to avoid. Last year we ended up with Fabrice Fernandes and Martin Djetou, which turned out to be the wrong thing to do. We signed them out of sheer desperation because we needed bodies for our European campaign.When we looked back it wasn't right for us. They didn't really feature and even though they were cheap we didn't get value for money. "I have to wait for the right opportunity and find the players that fit into our blueprint. Ideally, I would have liked a few in for pre-season, but when you want quality that is not always easy."

I sort of take Sams point that it was a good season last year but its hard to deny that the season rather fizzled out after we went out the UEFA cup but he is correct these are our golden years as a club so we should enjoy them while they last.

It doesn???t matter if you win the Champions League, if you bore people half to death they will slag you off. Nigel Mansell always got slagged off, Steve Davis received similar treatment, and Paula Radcliffe has never really had any respect. The simple fact is people would rather watch an entertaining loser.

Surely we're all ignorant and naive, aren't we? We only had to beat Middlesbrough youth team at home to qualify for Europe. If we'd done that then we wouldn't have had much to be disappointed about. But we didn't. How long will it be before the "we've never had it so good" company line becomes "it was nice while it lasted"? Europe was brilliant but, to all intents and purposes, that was something we achieved the season before last. I pay good money to support my team, and I don't expect to be abused by the manager just because our opinions differ. And competing with Chelsea, The Hun, Arsenal and Liverpool? Really?
snackum Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Well said Sam. I'd rather share a beer with the Chelski supporters after the game and discuss the 1-1 draw and how our style of play achieved it, than sit with MK Dons fans about how attacking we were and how we were unlucky to lose 3-0.

When we win I am delirious when we lose I am gutted how well we play is a secondary factor.

And that is the reason we can???t sell 15000 season tickets and Allardyce is getting pelters from all angles.

This will be a row that will forever divide people I think. Years ago, it cost spare change to go to the match and the folk you went with were half the fun. Now, as the costs are so high it is reasonable to expect a certain amount of entertainment for your dollars. For any other activity the same is demanded or you ask for your money back.

The reason he called our football crap was because he felt our style was 'bullying'. In fact Sam and the coaching staff correctly identified that Robbie Elliott, Shay Given et al were vulnerable in the air and exploited this ruthlessly. Since then Mourinho criticised our style after we drew 2-2 at Stamford Bridge. David O'Leary regularly criticises our style because his team, despite matching us in games between the two sides, cannot match our success. Since then this has just become an easy line for the media to take, as we are an unfashionable club anyway. There have been some good well balanced articles that tell it at is i.e. that we play to win and our games are on the whole no less boring than anybody elses. Remember Liverpool, West Ham, Charlton, Arsenal, Newcastle games last season? There are some boring games at the Reebok, but I think most BWFC fans would say that most are decent games. One thing that you cannot argue with is that we are one of the most all-action, motivated teams in the Prem. Stats show that we get the ball into box more than most teams so I suspect that we are in fact one of the least boring teams in the Prem. I thinkt more fans of other clubs would swap places with us than wouldn't.
