All I know is we've been on a bad run since January 2007. Most of that time has been covered by Sam Allardyce. For me the only two questions are

 

1 At at what point does Eddie Davies sack Sammy Lee?

 

2 Who do you get to replace him

 

 

I suspect if we lose to Reading next Saturday that will be the end for Sammy Lee. As for the second question Martin Jol perhaps - when he's been sacked by the spuds (sorry Spurs)

If you take into account results and performances from 2007 I think it's safe to say that the wheels had come off fairly comprehensively playing the Sam Allardyce way. My opinion is that playing the Sam Allardyce way requires you have a fully committed Sam Allardyce in charge. We didn't have this at the end of last season and we don't have this now.

 

So Sammy's gotta do it his way now . . . and if that's not gonna get good enough results then long term he was never the right man anyway. What I'm saying is at least this way we will find out early if he can take us forward.

We finished Saturday with 3 strikers and 2 wide players on the pitch but none of them troubled James in the slightest.

Yes but how many of them are good enough/fit enough? Alonso looked poor all game, and Braten oh dear!!!

Or, he could turn things around & all the doom & gloom merchants who've judged him on THREE games will go on & on about how they always knew he was great. Because ALL football fans are fickle, that applies for fans of any club.

 

I saw that football years show the other night, about when Fergie won the FA Cup with the filth. He was having a torrid time and would have lost his job had they lost at Forest................history would have been so much different had that happened.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm unsure if we'd been found out, personally. But the new approach isn't working yet, that's for sure.

Our squad of players hadn't changed bar losing TBH and the players at least knew the system. Surely it was sensible to stick with it initially, especially away from home?

I agree 100%. Away from home there is no reason to change too much of BSA approach.

 

I was surprised with Nolan's comments. Kev normally doesn't say anything too revealing yet he said he was unhappy about being subbed and didn't know where he was being asked to play.....worrying indeed!

That for me Jimmy was the most worrying part of the lot. For a club man like Nolan to come out with a statement like that is a telling sign that not all is rosey in the dressing room.

 

 

For me Lee has until one of the Autumn International Breaks to sort it out. I hope this will be the one in middle of November but on this form it may be the October one!!

Which is what I meant when I said Sammy is beginning to bug me with his jolly...

. . . after every drubbing.

 

My opinion is that his personality may rub some players up the wrong way. You sense that some of the players are getting narky at losing, perhaps secretly apportioning blame [ as their manager won't ] BUT instead of seeing the manager roasting those players who are to blame [ and generally kickin' some butt ] . . .I fear they may be getting the speech above... which is sure to wind them up and instill zero confidence.

 

It's all a guess though . . . I may be very wide of the mark

Portsmouth's first two goals were the result of canyon sized gaps in the defence. Their second involved our backline pushed all the way to the half way line when 1-1 after 30 mins. That is a system thing.

I am getting worried about LSL and the media.

 

He seems to be getting pushed into making statements by loaded questions from the press, that are not constructive for him or the club.

The quote mentioned by trotter58 will be taken by some in the Bolton Dressing Room as a dig at them.

If he's here til christmas - we're relegated. Also I said I suspect he'll be gone after Reading - playing a hunch here. You might be right about christmas, but Eddie Davies might have different ideas, especially if he sees his best players sold off and us going down the pan.

 

I asked when do you sack him and who do you put in his place.

You get what you deserve on the whole, to take Bolton Wanderers into Europe twice takes a bit more than luck. I cannot for the life of me understand anybody saying that we were lucky to get in Europe, we got the required number of points, that's it.

2) The qualifying criteria are set out before the season. If you meet them, you meet them. 40+ games, a long season, if you meet the criteria you deserve it in my book.

you can look at many many missed goals, disallowed goals, etc etc throughout a season that could have affected where we finished where we did and others finished where they did

I agree entirely that you don't come 7th by sheer luck!! It's a marvellous achievement and one we and the club can be proud of and one that - for the all bad second half of the season - they clearly deserved. You're absolutely spot on that you get the league position you deserve. BUT that has nothing to do with concept of whether you get into UEFA by luck or not! You earn your 7th place in the league but then you need luck on your side to mean that that gets you into Europe.

Looking back over the past 10 PL seasons you can use the current qualification routine to see who would have got into UEFA each year (the criteria have changed over the years and of course there used to be the Cup Winners cup, so this is based solely on applying current criteria to past tables).

Obviously, by definition everyone who finished 5th each of those 10 years would have qualified under current criteria.

In 7 years out of the 10 those that finished 6th would have qualified. So we can reasonably say that if you manage to finish 6th you could "expect" a UEFA place and could consider yourself unlucky if you didn't get one.

But in only 3 of the 10 years would the 7th place team have qualified - one being last year of course. So - albeit a gross simplification and generalisation - those figures indicate that if you finish 7th you've a 30% chance of qualifying for the UEFA.

Now in that case, how is qualifying anything other than lucky?

To call it lucky is not demeaning to the 7th place finish; and it's certainly not demeaning to the UEFA experience (as someone who did 'em all I can attest to). But in the very end if you finish 7th you need luck on your side to get into the UEFA. That's my point.
