Cahill

The guy is immense. His defending is top class, he has the composure and skill to play the ball out of defence, he is hard as nails, he gives 100% every game, he hardly makes a mistake, and he has sorted out a terrible defence.

If we can keep him for long enough then IMO he can become the best we have had (even above Bergsson). He will also make a very very good captain IMO.

We just need to make sure we can keep hold of him.

All of that was once applicable to a certain Alan Stubbs. Just saying like!

Best centre back I have seen at BWFC - Paul Jones.

My Dad's opinion too, by a street apparently

My favourite - Stubbs. Yard of pace more and he'd have been exceptional

Cahill isn't actually that good. Just the best out of a bad bunch and the only half decent performer over the last few week. With the football we play it is essential to keep clean sheets and our biggest problem this season is just that. Best Wanderers defender for some time is Ben Haim. He brought more to the back 4 than anyone else and has been sorely missed.

Cahill is good with the potential to become a BWFC great. 'Only half decent performer'? FFS - Davies v West Ham; McCann v Boro; Al Habsi v Boro.

Ben Haim was good but prone to daydreaming from time to time IMO.

Agree with you on the goals conceded though. Our GA should be lower.

Cahill has the makings of a decent defender. However he'll have to go a long way to reach Gudni's level IMO.

Paul Jones for me too, would have played for England if he had not played for use

Agree with that

Cahill has the potential to be a good un. He has probably been the best performer since his arrival but he still has alot to learn. Clearing his lines would help, the amount of times he heads the ball straight up in the air is worrying. To his credit he does go and win the next ball. 1 thing that does annoy me is, why do we put players on the line when we take corners? They always seem to be coming away from goal when trying to head on target. Surely its easier to be running onto the corner.

ermmm, you missed our last two goals?

No I havn't and I was going to say that but it just seems obvious to me. Both goals came from 2nd balls. If Cahill was moving onto the ball at Boro he would of buried it. Because he was coming back he gave the keeper a chance.

if he was coming onto it, hed have been blocked off by the guy marking that 'zone'

Not the best ever, but very promising.

I always rated Fairclough as a great Bolton centre half.

Gudni and Laville as well of course.

Spotted a samhater post that totally agree with.

Fairclough was a big favourite of mine.

Bolton have been blessed with some great centre halves over the years. In each division we have played in we have had centre backs that were good enough for higher divisions. i agree with all the ones that have already been mentioned. also Came, Walsh and Coleman off the top of my head. Apparently the ones that played in Nat Lofthouses team were decent but I wouldn't know about that.

When fit, Warhurst did a decent job at centre back too.

For Cahill to be ranked alongside Bergsson, we need to be having this conversation in 2 years time.

The doubts I have about Cahill (head strong, sometimes dives in - pens v Blackburn and Arsenal) will hopefully be resolved with more games, age and experience.

My father asked me about Cahill this morning. I said that he is brilliant and struggled to think of anyone better than him at Bolton.

Bergsson excelled for years and Cahill has made a couple of mistakes, but have we ever seen anyone better?

bergy best player ive seen in a white shirt , and im going back to 1970's !!! BUT cahill has the talent to be better .... captain next year please :yahoo: :yahoo:

I'll be happy if he's still here.

The level of football being played has too count when comparing? Bergsson was consistently excellent for us but did play most of his games for us at division 1/championship level. Don't think laville ever played in the premiership. The type of opponent cahill is perfoming against is of a higer standard than others mentioned. Same with Ben haim. Surely that has to count for something. Having only been here for a few months it is difficult to compare him to club legends but he is potentially a very good premier league centre back for us or someone else. Ben haim for me was excellent last season, against some of the best strikers around.

i think we are all forgetting our enzo!!

Laville played all his games in premiership for us. Only played lower on loan at coventry i think.

Big Ged wasn't a bad centre-half either.

Not the greatest granted but:

He was more of a "player" than many people give him credit for.

And he was hard as fook - loved it when he picked up 6ft7 Craig Forrest by his neck away at West Ham

Taggart is one of the few people I have seen get a deserved red card when the ref knew he had got the ball. Forget the game but he really cleaned the guy out and it was pretty obvious!

Meite and Faye are the best combination (with Ben Haim right back, Gardner left as part of a formidable defence) . That is FACT.
