worthy10 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I know it was only stoke, and there were poor. But what a refreshing change. Muamba was MOM. elmander looks class, very direct gets a shot off asap. he helped davies who played with so much freedom and confidence. back 4 solid. nolan great start. We looked very fit, and at times quite arrogant. There seemed to be a tactic today of getting crosses in early. Steinson, goal of the month contender We are top of the league God to see Browny win too/ Bring on the toon. I'm all giddy?????!!!!!!!!!

Hutch Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I know its only Stoke but Davies and Elmander worked well Muamba played well Thought Nolan was MOM today, seem to control central midfield and was unlucky not to have a goal
H Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 And the best part for me is that we killed the game off instead of sitting back on a lead.
Football Genius Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Muamba was excellent today, won 50-50's, tackled well, distributed the ball, class performance. Elmander also had a quality debut, focal point of the attack, nice header for the goal, good work rate, very impressive. Steiner was superb getting forward down the right and Matty T was excellent down the left. Happy! NSL singing stand my arse, ESL showed them right up!
trotter58 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Apparently we fluked it: http://oatcakefanzine.proboards27.com/inde...mp;thread=38992

globaldiver Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I dont care how bad stoke was we gave them a beating and thats what matters. ROB Stoke had chances; if they had gone in.............
Eddie Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Most things already been said. Stoke were VERY poor but it doesn't take anything away from our performance. I thought Muamba was quality, broke everything up and quickly distributed. I also thought JOB was quite good, he just sat infront of the defence, recieved the ball off Muamba and spread it out wide. Elmander was impressive, strong technically brilliant, quality first touch and quicker than I think most of us realised. And we already have a contender for goal of the season, Kitson said it was a complete fluke, fcuk off you ginger red ginger.
victor meldrew Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 we beat the worst team in the league... thats all.... there are many more dificult games ahead. however top of the league....can't argue ......................until next week.
SatanGreavsie Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 How bad was their Griffin?! As I said to the lads around me, is that his surname of the name of the pub he plays for? As for us, the sight of Steinsson shaking his head and cursing at the final whistle for us having conceded the consolation goal 30s earlier bodes well - he obviously cares.

bolty58 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Needs to be taken in context. Stoke have no quality whatsoever (well, maybe Fuller has a little bit bit that's it). You can only do a Sammy Lee and take the positives. Elmander looks like he will be very effective in the PL. Muamba looks like he'll be a cracker - all action. Everyone looked pretty solid. Looks like Nolan will prove a few wrong - especially the weight watchers society. You can only beat what's put in front of you. Be interesting to see how many points we've acquired in a few weeks time just before we face two tough ones. Hopefully, we'll have given the Carling Cup tie a shake by then as well. You'd have to give the performance against Stoke 8 or 9 out of 10?
Krimzon Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Good result against poor opposition. If luck and set pieces is all they can hope for they are fubar'd...only we can do that. Shame we had to give them a goal due to JLS giving the ball away needlessly but its all about dusting off the cobwebs and 3 points thanks very much. Nolan MOM seems the only one capable of playing a cutting edge pass. Muamba looked impressive as the game went on especially for a 20 year old and as a supposed defensive midfielder he seemed keen to get fo'erd. Elmander showed some good touches, excellent work ethic and good in the air...still to adjust to the prem....when Cahill was telling him which way to run for one of his hoofs he was signalling to give him a rest as he was knackered....but the prospect of 2 KD's with one that scores is looking good....as the comments around me in the ESL were "he looks too good for us ", I take it we like him. Matt Taylor may cover more ground than anyone else but how much time does he actually spend on the ball ? JOB put a great ball in for Elmanders goal but apart from that I fail to see what he offers. The defense did well against the Gullivers, Jussi didn't put a foot wrong apart from when he put a foot wrong. KD was his usual self, 'knock the oppos teeth out and laff when they try and foul him' Thought it was a sensible decision to replace Elmander with Mcannt to sure up the middle but it left us with no outlet, should have blooded some of the others i.e. JOB for Riga to give us a pacy outlet but all in all very drunk and very happy. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.
buddha41 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 you lot are deluded . stoke were in control till your cross hit the net knocked us for six dont get excited you wont be far from us come end of season !
Northern White Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 you lot are deluded . stoke were in control till your cross hit the net knocked us for six dont get excited you wont be far from us come end of season ! Stoke were simply the worst side I have ever seen at the reebok. I'm saying a 20 point cushion between us by the end of your brief sojourn in the Prem. We can get a lot better than that, you don't seem that you will be able to. Nearly everyone predicted that stoke would come out like the clappers for the first half an hour. Nearly everyone predicted that that's when our class would show. Between 30 and 45 mins we scored 3 excellent goals. Took the foot off the pedal in the second half with the job done. In the past, we've outplayed teams for 20 mins and got ourselves hammered by the end. You need to learn. Being plucky in this league is a recipe for relegation.
Carlos Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 you lot are deluded . stoke were in control till your cross hit the net knocked us for six dont get excited you wont be far from us come end of season ! We've had 8 years of watching Premier League football in which to judge it, it's nothing personal. Stoke are the worst side I've seen since Leicester who failed to beat us despite us playing with 9 mean for most of the game. You only scored when all the players knew the game was over, trust me, it takes a lot more than you've got to score regularly in this league. I'm not one to get giddy but I said we had a goal coming after about 15 minutes. Lobbing throw-ins into the 6 yard box is a tactic we used successfully 5 years ago, it was never THAT successful. I can see Stoke getting more points than Derby or maybe Sunderland a couple of years ago (22?) but that's about it. Tactically, you were all at sea, playing a flat back 4 meant 2 centre backs to deal with Elamander (badly) and gave us an extra man in midfield which gave the very impressive Muamba too much space. No confidence at the back, naivity in giving away free kicks by making Championship challenges, no creativity, no pace and no one who looked a real threat up front. Call me deluded but I've seen us ripped to pieces by the big four yet soak it up and come out with points, you could get hit for double figures by these teams. We'll be alright, don't you worry.
