Ended up coming back down here with me car on the back of an AA wagon after the Blackburn game; gauge was saying it was overtheating, when it wasn't, but when all the alarm lights came on it put the fucker into an auxilliary cooling malarky which then gives you fuck all power but allows you to limp home (but not drive 100 odd miles).

After paying a fucking fortune to the Ford garage here to get all sorts done on its brain and wiring it still did it (Xmas morning!) and then when takne back in they couldn't replicate the fault on a short test drive. But just been out in it now and the issue kicks in when you're up to motorway speed; 4 minutes at 70-75 on the A50 and wallop, temp gauage goes mental then calms down then mental again - effect seems to go when you drop back down to 50 odd. But if I'd have carried on at full speed, undoubtedly all the warnings would have kicked in and I'd had the same grief as before. Before I spend any more money with those cunts, is there summat simple it might be?

Oh and yes, I know what happens now..."rub a balloon over it", "pour molten lard on the plugs" etc etc

Get your alternator checked and water pump, also could be an ecu problem. My golf did it while ago, temp went up, all lights flashing butr the fan belt eventually snapped and after been rteplacing has been fine

Lightening McQueen stops on the line and helps the King over the line, means he loses the Piston Cup bit shows he has values back in order.

Sequel out later this year I think

Do you know what Ford did? Did they replace the temperature sensor? (I'm assuming they would of tbh) Also, what car is it?

Focus.

The exact working on the original bill is:

Trace fault to dash pod - faulty, replace unit

Reprogramme ECU

Replace wiring loom to temp sensor plug cracked.

I'll not tell you how much they fucking charged for that

?1400 - ?1700?

Seems a bit odd that they would do all that and not replace the (relatively cheap) water temperature sensor. How has the car been when cold and first starting up?

starts fine, no probs. gauge does seem to hit the normal running mark pretty quick though - within hardly any time of driving off; original AA diagnosis was just the temp sensor as when he used his handheld temp gauge the engine was running normal, but connected up to the computer that was outputting 50o higher.

Hang on, I am no mechanic but they replaced the wiring loom but not the actual sensor? Then they did a 'Reprogramme of ECU' - really? Not that many mainstream cars have reprogrammable ECUs but the Focus may have to be fair to them, I don't know - but why would it need it and how much does that cost!?

If you get no joy off here with advice, take it to an decent independant garage to have a look at it and if they fix it then play holy hell with the Ford garage and get some money back!

I had exactly the same problem with my Focus it turned out to be the water pump impeller that broke away from the shaft,i was told it was a common problem because they are made of plastic, got a new water pump for about ?30 but they now come with a metal impeller and not had a problem since.

even down to it only manifesting when you get up speed?

If so, I'll have me fucking ?700 back

Plus, wouldn't that lead to a genuine overheating? This clearly isn't as the temp gauge flickers all over the shop when the effect kicks in. I'd happily ignore it if it wasn't for the fact that car's brain doesn't, and if it carries on too long it goes into this low power mode...

It only showed it was overheating on motorway doing 70 plus or going uphill at 60ish,if i pulled over for 5 minutes it was back to normal and then if i stuck to 60ish on motorways it was also fine.I tried driving around at high revs to see if it overheated at lower speeds but it wouldn't. I thought it was strange but its been about 9 months since i got the new pump and i've not had a problem since and i've probably done about 25000 miles in that time.

To add to this it never did actually overheat,it was only the temperature guage that said it was overheating, there was never any sign of steam and it never lost any water.

they do do this, to the latest software.

usually part of maintenance and not chargeable.

You've paid ?700 to get it fixed. If it ain't fixed take it back and tell them what the problem is. Don't tell them you aren't paying again but when they give you a second bill show them their first invoice. They obviously didn't repair to an acceptable standard but charged you as though they had.

The good news G/L is that they agreed with you about the pump and changed it :good:

The bad news is it's still fucked

Train it is on Monday then :nea:

Would it be easier for you to rent a car mate?
