after those first 2 or 3 games, I thought Beardsley was a very astute signing

fuck knows what went wrong

few months later, seem to remember an article around the time that Newcastle were crying out for a player like him in the Champions League whilst he'd been relegated to our reserves

In theory Jon Dahl Tomasson was the perfect replacement for Beardsley that summer.

Shearer injured and Ian Rush being well past it meant Tomasson playing up top, which is why he’s seen as a flop despite having a great career as a midfielder/forward elsewhere.

Globally the ticker tape thing did start then as you say, but I'd say it had died out by the time we for some unknown reason resurrected it around 1986.  The first I saw of it was at Derby (you posted highlights, 2-1 defeat) and someon had printed off bits of paper saying BWFC Wembley 86 on!  We'd got to the dizzy heights of the Northern Quarter Final where we were due to go to Darlington.  We were relatively safe in the league and focused on some cup excitement, there was loads of ticker tape at most games leading upto Wembley.  It must have been carrying on the season after looking at that Tranmere video, I swear no other clubs were doing it for routine matches, very odd!

You mean this one. Wasn't there but I know there was a load of trouble on this night. Was disappointed when none of it surfaced on the footage!

I think there was fear factor going to the big city clubs, we hadn’t been in the top league since 64 and football hooliganism was rife back then , Man U, City, Anfield and goodison were rough as fuck, anyhow this BWFC daft kid aged 15 did City on the bus crossing Salford flats which was as dangerous as swimming across shark infested waters back then, also saw the 2-1 OT win (just checked it was 2 days before my 15th birthday, what a present that was)  and the Liverpool 3-0, at this time the anfield road end was famed for chucking darts at away fans, needless to say my parka hood remained up all game.

Out of all those I only did the two City aways - as did Granada TV and Gerald Sinstadt. Both are up on You Tube. In the first season, Frank's consolation goal for us in the 2-1 defeat is a pearler. In the 2-2 we were in the seats level with the penatly area from which Peter Reid dispatched his last minute equaliser. Don't remember being scared but I was about 11 at the time!!!

I think these sterile grounds and largely trouble-free matchday experiences helped swell away crowds massively.  Unless you were an absolute barnpot who went mostly for the aggro the pre and post game experience was enough to make you think twice about going, especially as a group of teenagers. It was probably much more bearable for those whose dads went too.

A touch before my time but I believe the one very notable exception to the state of affairs you describe was Everton away in the League Cup Semi Final first leg in 76/7

Yep. Monotonous.

When I saw it back You Tube for the first time I remember Dennis Tuert's second for them and Neil Whatmore's header for us like it was yesterday. Hadn't remembered Mike Carter's brilliance in the build up though.

I've got a 0-1 league win up there in a very similar part of that same season. I'll have to get it up on You Tube at some point. I think there's a further 0-1 league win in 86/7 to post. I won't bother with the 1-0 defeat at Feethams in our Div 4 season.

I drove to the Darlington quarter final in my red Chevette, I remember it over heating on the way and I had to keep stopping to let it cool down.  BW fans were so up for this game, and Darlo didnt seem interested but fancied a scrap afterwards.  Great atmosphere from us lot, about 1k there.  Again, some really quality build up play and finishes, what a goal from Asa.

I was in the City home end behind the goal that Tueart scored.  I was about 13 and my older brother's mate drove us, we only decided to go at midday - fancy going to watch Bolton at City?  Yeah go on then, not doing anything else.  No trouble finding a parking spot in Moss Side, walked upto the turnstyle and paid a couple of quid, no hassle sorting tickets, no queuing.  When City went 2 up everyone around us was singing City Are Back, that didn't last long.

If you watch the video for both our goals there was a few Bolton celebrating in the platt lane end that day.

It was a reserve game against Port Vale on the same night Newcastle played Barcelona away. Jussi’s debut, no less. Let two through his legs in the first 10 minutes and we thought we’d never see him play again.

Back page of the Daily Mail and a page inside. “As his old mates go to Barcelona, Beardsley goes to Leigh” was the headline I think. I actually had the paper cutting for that for years in a (sadly since thrown away) scrapbook. Figured it was the only time I’d see Hilton Park on the back page of a national newspaper.

I haven't watched this yet, but it's got to be worth it. It's Youri fucking Djorkaeff!

Edit: I've watched it now. Skip to about 53:20 if you're only interested in his time with us.

Today's post harks back to the 1986/7 season. It was a year filled with poor performances that ended in relegation but there was bad luck too. None more so than at Bournemouth in the early stages of the campaign.

We'd won 1 and lost 2 our first three league games and looked a decent bet to pick something up in this encounter with plenty of first half chances created before Tony Caldwell scored an absolute screamer (my main reason for posting this game). Shortly after however, Mark Gavin got himself sent off for a petty reaction to a bad challenge. It all went sour from there.

Despite being a man down the equaliser did not arrive until the second half. To describe it as a soft penalty would be an understatement. It was converted by Robbie Savage, who 12 months later would be playing in a Bolton shirt in Division 4. The home side then took the lead with an impressive curling finish before Steve Elliot got his marching orders in injury time, prompting a colourful outburst from Dave Higson at the expense of the man in black.
