Messi is clearly the best current player in the world. I resisted for a while because of the hype, but there comes a time when you have to say 'fair fucks....i was wrong'.

Higuain is a top, top player, but Messi is on another level. Spanish league would have been much tighter this year with a fit Higuain mind.

 

Messi is 2nd only to Ronaldo in players in my lifetime. Messi looks after himself more though so I think he will surpass him in a couple of years

ok, so you're now writing off both club and individual acheivements as a benchmark for judging a player, sort of makes the whole thing rather subjective, which is fair enough if a little short sighted

 

erm, as for comparing to Zidane and Ronaldo, well, he's not in their generation for a start - by the time he played his first game for Barca Zidane had won the WC, Euros, Serie A and Champions League whilst Ronaldo had a similar haul of trophies!

 

but by the time he was 23 Zidane had only won the Intertoto cup with Bordeaux (and was being linked to Blackburn)!!

 

he's the best in this generation, name a better player who's done more in the last 8 years since his debut!

I wish I didn't have to write out individual awards as they should mean something, but its no different than winning the x factor, its a popularity contest.

As for the last 8 years, id say ronaldinho, he is the one who turned this barca team around and he did it at the 2002 world cup. He was shit at the 06 world cup, but he has done it for both club and country. The fact he bombed at the 06 world cup is a major reason why he wont be remembered at the very very top alongside maradonna, ronaldo and zidane.

This debate between Garp and Zico demonstrates how football has changed since I started watching. The big argument then was who was the best Finney or Matthews. We had never even heard of most foreign players let alone seen them play. Now the argument is about two players who don't even play in this country.

Football is a game between two teams. What matters is succeeding in scoring more goals.

 

That can lead to success and trophies and medals. Nice if it happens.
