Guest Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I was in tears after 10 days of shitting through the eye of a needle when I was in the Dominican Republic. Must have been a shit holiday because my lasting memory of it was me sprinting to the bog near the bar of the resort to be met by a foot long turd sticking out the water,,,,, it must have been a fuckin German that dropped that.... the Luftwaffe would have been proud of it. It really rubbed salt into the would when all I could pass was an orange liquid Presumably, only amber liquid went in? Quote

MalcolmW Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) whats that pole vault lass bootin off about?? The German? I think she felt, on mature reflection, that her coach's advice to pass after 1 failure at 4.70 was wrong. She needed a higher clearance to have a medal chance, but if she had cleared 4.70 at the secord or third attempt she would then have had 3 attempts at 4,75 and even third attempt clearance would have got her bronze (and pushed the Russian world record holder out of the medals). She only had 2 attempts at 4.75 because that gave her 3 successive failures, and elimination. Edited August 6, 2012 by MalcolmW Quote

MalcolmW Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Malcolm lives in a caravan in fife I was watching the athletics on BBC1 but had the channel showing just the pole vault, live and without commentary, on the laptop. Most of what was shown of the vault on BBC1 was recorded, although Bleasdale's attempts and most of the late stuff were live. They also showed some jumps out of sequence - Rogowska fouling out at 4.45 after Bleasdale's clearance on her final attempt at that height, when Rogowska was the first to jump. You can only follow the tactical passing of jumps if you see every jump. There were 5 examples of passing further attempts plus one of skipping a height after entering the competition. Quote

Didledee Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 What a match USA 4-3 Canada was, really end to end, 120+2 minute winner. Not sure how Canada's no.11 didn't snap her leg, any more force and she'd have had her knee bent inwards, probably career threatening. Quote

MalcolmW Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) What film? 'Chariots of Fire' - but only as an extra for a 15 secs clip of the 1500m. Bebibgton Oval was used as the Paris stadium in the film because it has a wooden stand along the full length of the straight. Filming was Tuesday and Wednesday, continuing Thursday and Friday if necessary. As I was committed to doing a retirement presentation for a colleague on the Friday I turned it down! Just realised that today is 43 years to the day that I spend with Harold Abrahams at his flat in Kensington, looking at his collection of ahletics material, before going on to run a race at what is now the Linford Christie Stadium (adjacent to Wormwood Scubs). In 1924 HA was initially selected for the 100, 200, 4x100 and long jump. After the "Daily Express" said he should be allowed to concentrate on the 100 he was withdrawn from the long jump. But he had actually written the article himself under an assumed name. Edited August 6, 2012 by MalcolmW Quote
