SatanGreavsie Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Marsh, not being funny but adding a Latin phrase doesn't add any gravitas to an argument, especially on here. Garp has already said he's not what you'd call a well educated lad. I'm gutted - knew it was coming, but I had me money on Page 81. Them cunts at befair have done me up like a kipper! Quote

fatolive Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 question for those in the know, been watching the water polo stuff, when they all race to the ball at the restarts, what keeps the ball in place? it's floating on water yet doesn't move with ten or so blokes splashing and stirring up the water. There are three small newts employed to keep it in place, as soon as the ball becomes "live" they swim to the side of the pool Quote

Casino Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 cheers, thought it would be something like that, but didn't like to guess and appear stupid in case they still employed the old rub it with a balloon method. wiki says the ball is placed in the middle of the pool and is supported with a floating ring Quote
Ani Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Father had issues with it, so I've promised to never gamble. She would have won if she'd been 0.2 slower than her PB too. But she's 19 and getting better every day; more impressive was her opponant making a good go at it and knocking the same off her PB. fair enough on the first point, respect that. if trott was .1 slower would she have finished second in the time trial behind the aussie whose time she beat by 3 10ths of a second ? now that would put her on same points as the yank, i think, not sure who would get the gold then, think it reverts to total time so assume trott would have won or would the yank ? MalcolmW Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 (edited) Do USA, China and GBR get an overall medal or trophy for their overall medal count? now with the Olympics over and it's been great, football is now in true focus. The medals table is officially unofficial. It is arbitrary and designed by media. Who says 1 gold is better than 10 silvers? Who says 9 golds + 1 silver + 1 bronze is better than 8 golds + 20 silvers + 20 bronze? There are no Olympic rules - each sport has its own governing body and rules. In athletics there was a 3 way tie for thirdi the men's high jump. Each competitor got a bronze and each was counted as such. This would have been the case even if all 3 were from the same country. Logically each should count as one third (if the medal table really mattered). In boxing there are 2 bronzes. The reason for this is that defeated boxers cannot fight again 2 days later (they might both have significant injuries). Logically these should count as halves (see above). In 1952 no silver medal was awarded* because Johannsson was disqualified in the final. If the second finisher in athletics or swimming was disqualified silver and bronze would still be awarded. In the triathlon the younger Brownlee was penalised 15 secs (and whinged about it) for a technical error (mounting his bike while still in the transition zone). In athletics or swimming an equivalent technical error would have meant disqualification and no medal. UK Sport sets each governing body a medals target and uses performance against their own target to determine future funding. The only reason the imperfect medal table is referred to is because no better simple mechanism exists. But even that would be improved by giving points (say 10 for gold, 3 for silver, 1 for bronze). * It was awarded 30 years later as a sop. Edited August 12, 2012 by MalcolmW Quote
