November 21, 201213 yr Get the bus tour tickets. Bus goes everywhere you need to see, and you can get on and off. Should be good now, not too busy.

November 21, 201213 yr I will be going next October- ish if you want a decent hotel, v well situated for everything - cept vatican...read on hotel julia hostoric rome is small from julia to trevi is 5 minutes you can get everywhere within 30 minutes walk (cept vatican/st peters...use metro) barberini metro is 3 minutes walk from julia - 10 minutes from there to vatican/st peters bottle of peroni is 6 euros, or 80 cents from the supermarket draught 400cl is 6 - 10 euros fly with jet2 to fiuminicio - get on the fast train - its about 20 quid each, return oh aye, colosseum dissappoints me pantheon amazes me Edited November 21, 201213 yr by Casino
November 21, 201213 yr Spanish steps are a bit boring but I suppose you have to see it. Trevi fountain is good. Vatican is worth a visit too even I'd recommend it and I don't like art or god. Ice cream is ace in Italy too
November 21, 201213 yr vatican- is a must and im not religous,the walk below to see the old popes and if you have the time go right to the very top,its bit of a trek but the views of rome are ace. metro is good and will get you around quick. coloseum is fab , the guided tours can be busy but intersting. don't get in a taxi there f.....g mental.

November 21, 201213 yr Trastevere has some nice small piazzas with good pizzas about. Forum was the best of the historic sites for me.

November 22, 201213 yr If you want to see The Pope his audience is in St Peter's Square is on Wednesday midday..ish If that's not your thing then my only advice is don't eat or drink anywhere near the main squares in Rome as you'll pay a fortune. We were stung 4 years ago paying £100 for 4 pizzas, 2 beers and two diet cokes. The mistake we made was that we headed for the nearest restuarant, after 2 hours in the Sistene Chapel, without a consideration for cost. In hindsight there were no prices on the menu (we didn't notice and we paid the price) and we were'nt the only unhappy campers in the restaurant that afternoon. If you wander down the back streets you'll find much better value but do remember to ask the price before you buy. Oh, and watch for the pick-pockets, it's rife in Rome.

We went to a gig there and it looked like there is a huge punk/goth scene. Food was lovely but like any city, don't go to any in the immediate vicinity of any tourist attractions. We caught the Cagliari V Lazio game out there.

November 22, 201213 yr Rivals Madrid for the 'Pickpocketing capital of Europe' title. As one who has been and is a fairly regular visitor, there would be at least 20 towns/cities I would recommend before Rome. As far as the Vatican is concerned, couldn't stomach it. Wife has relatives in the south who are pretty much starving themselves during the week then they are not ashamed at Sunday Mass with little or nothing to put in the collection tray. Then you witness the opulence of the Vatican and realise that, if the cardinals and their boss were true to their word, they could probably solve 50% plus of the worlds starvation/poverty problems and still have enough small change left to keep them all in under age rent boys for the rest of their lives.
November 22, 201213 yr We went for our 10yr anniversary in June. Try Deko Rome.Top notch B&B just off Via Veneto. 10 min walk from Spanish Steps, Trevi. The owners are Romans and amazing - talk you through the city on a map, places to go, avoid etc. Best restaurants, pizza, coffee, ice cream. They will book everything for you as well. You wont get ripped off if you stick to their recommendations. At the end of the day they are always waiting to chat with a glass of Prosecco or a beer. Cant do enough for you. Pre-book the Vatican Museum and Colliseum and skip the queues. Do a roof-top meal and then walk down from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi with a gelato at night. Italian families out and about at midnight enjoying the night air. We loved the place, felt safe. Fly Ryanair to Campino airport and the hotel will pre-book a cab for 40 Euro.

Personally I hated the Vatican As an atheist I shouldn't give a shit, but all of that splendour didn't sit well with me in line with my own beliefs of what the Christian church should stand for. It actually gave me cold shivers Love the cafes, pizzerias and restaurants on the piazzas. Went once on a work weekend and we hit the bars around the gay area...had a belting night too. Had a bottle of duff beer, which made me smile. Belting place for me - loved it. But take comfortable shoes. Oh and get an audio tour of the Colosseum otherwise if you walk around on your own you miss out on loads of it; I've done it both ways

November 22, 201213 yr never been but Venice and rome are on my city break list for next year along with Paris,Dubrovnik and I may even visit our welsh friend in Germany.
