did hmv 'sell' them or did hmv take the money off you to pass to somebody else

 

if hmv sold them, you should be like any other creditor and you'll have a claim against them

if another business sell them - to use at hmv etc etc - your dispute would be with them

Game charge less when you buy online than they do in the store but you can only use gift cards in store, not online.

So you check the price online, say £15, go to the store and suddenly its £25.

I would say no, HMV used to be a great music shop, I used to get loads of vinyl from the one in Manchester, then it all went DVD and computer games, lost a bit of what HMV was after that

See, I have to disagree. Since the 80s I've had to go to specialised record shops for most of my collection. Whenever I've been in HMV they're been quite clueless. Maybe they made a decision not to stock certain genres, and not train their staff to know about them, but I moved from going in the Spin Inn to the internet (still using the Spin Inn though, but in cyber space)

HMV didn't offer anything "different" as has been mentioned on here.

 

At least us Horridgers still have the Turntable though

Their web business was totally fucked, a total none starter. Had that been in place, they'd still be healthy.

Is nobody using Twitter or Facebook to organise the holders of giftcards and vouchers into some form of group? Or will folk just accept it with apathy, I mean, there's probably only about £250k knocking about in worthless cards/vouchers? They can have that as a goodbye present...

HMV were also competing against supermarkets who sold CD's Games and DVD's as a loss leader to get folk through the door and they also only stocked the top sellers.

Years ago, before broadband was widespread in homes - I thought that listening post consoles in high street music shops, with an option to have your selection burned onto CD or other portable data, were a possible insurance against the CD market going tits up.

If I can't find some if my more obscure tastes in music then I tend to buy from the band direct through their own web shop.

 

Only tend to buy from hmv when I get bought vouchers or I get sucked in by the 3 for 10 blu rays.

download, legally or illegally, then importing to itunes then to iphone was just a massive pain in the arse

 

playlists - I can knock em up in no time, I have no desire to own a hard copy

i remember waiting a week to order and get Jagged Little Pill and The It Girl back in 1996, but preferred that to going in Bolton and spending in somewhere like HMV
