DazBob Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Reet, bird's mum wants to cancel sky. She doesn't want to barter, she doesn't want to get X amount of months free, etc, etc. She just wants to cancel it. Will she still be able to use her box for the channels you'd normally get through freeview and will she still be able to 'plus' stuff as well? ... or is the Sky box worthless/useless after they've switched her off. Ta Quote
Winchester White Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 It will be useless unless you get a card off sky to watch the free to air stuff - I think its a tenner. Can't use the plus stuff though I don't think but someone off here might know better. Quote

Sy86 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I cancelled for a few weeks last year. Still used the box for freeview and a couple of extra channels on too. I think the box is good untill they issue new cards to all customers. I had a 75% off offer sent and I was back watching sky while I was still on the phone to them. Quote
Sy86 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Oh it won't record and you can't watch anything that's been saved. Quote
DazBob Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 Oh it won't record and you can't watch anything that's been saved. Ok, ta, that's the clincher then. I'll tell her to buy herself a freeview recorder. Is there a market for second hand sky+ boxes then? Is it worth flogging? Quote
Danny G Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 You need to look into buying a Skybox F5 with 12 months free gift off Ebay Quote
frankietheman Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 There are several for sale on fleabay around the £25 mark. Might be worth a punt there? Quote
Garrp Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 box is fine sky plus isnt it will still work, but make sure she doesnt use as they will just charge £10 a month. Insist they cancel it Quote
Pablo Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Im paying too much for Virgin, guna see what I can get with sky Quote

Insist they cancel it Cheers. I think she already has done, but I'll check. I think I'll just get the box off her and put it on Ebay, whatever it goes for, it goes for. She can then put that towards a freeview recorder. Quote
HomerJay Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 send an email, and they wont argue she will get freeview channels on existing card, until they totally cancel the card (if ever do) worth paying the minimum sub so she can still record imo. or even entertainment or entertainment plus channels (just no movies for sport) for £21.50 or 26.50 a month. which is decent value imo. Quote
HomerJay Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 beware of any pain of using a box other than sky many are not great. go for youview if you can Quote
Burndens Bogs Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Im paying too much for Virgin, guna see what I can get with sky Same here. The price seems to go up every fcuking month. Quote
bgoefc Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 As others have said. I had four boxes but the cards still all worked for the free channels. I sold one box on ebay then bought a Humax reconditioned free sat box from their online site. This will record etc. Never looked back and dont miss sky one jot. Quote

She doesn't want to pay out for anything. ... also, I'd argue it's not worth paying anything per month just so you can record stuff. I've had freeview recorders in the past (got a Youview box now) and never had any problems. Quote
HomerJay Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 will she not be paying for the freeview box? how much is a decent one? the old box will be worth feck all. Quote
DazBob Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 will she not be paying for the freeview box? how much is a decent one? the old box will be worth feck all. Last two I've bought have been reconditioned units and cost under £100, that means it'll pay for itself in under a year. If I can get her £20 for her Sky box then that's a net spend of £80, meaning it's paid for in under 8 months. Not sure why you think anything except SKY's own is shit. You must've trialled a lot to come to such an informed opinion? Quote
HomerJay Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 i have had a few. although none of the newer ones to be fair. Quote
frank_spencer Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I couldn't handle not having sky. other than bbc and channel 4's array of channels i don't watch anything on freeview it's seemingly all repeats of stuff from the sky channels and reality shite. Quote
DazBob Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 I've got full Sky but it only ever gets turned on to watch sports. There's so many other ways nowadays to watch what you want, when you want that one's TV should fit around one's life ... not t'other way round. Quote
no balls Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I couldn't handle not having sky. This Not really so much sport for me these days but Atlantic, Fox & all the Discovery, Nat geo Eden type channels. Oh & the guilty pleasures on E4, but I think that could be free view. I have the Sky radio on quite a bit too. Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 (edited) I was talking to my mate Wolfie Smith about not having Sky t'other day, I had to confess to him that I felt I was missing out. Edited March 21, 2013 by Youri McAnespie Quote
frankietheman Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Have had a Humax freesat recorder for over 3 years without any problems at all. If you can live without sport and films. Would'nt dream of going back to Sky Quote
