How many did we take against Watford in play offs, more than against Preston? I always excused the fact Preston had more due to the fact we had been to a few play off finals and they hadn't. Plus being a shit fan I didn't go Preston one, ended up watching it in a pub in Scotland but that's another story.

Watford had 37,000 at Wembley, we had around 30,000.

Eidur, what were you doing lad!

I've just had an email offering tickets for Millwall v Wigan in a "neutral" area.

Snap em up as there fuck all you'll get a chance in Wigan's end

I've had the same email. Funny there's no deal or neutral for the Sunday game!

Buy em,Sell em at an inflated price loadsa money too be made,ps did it come from a Nigerian Prince?

Wigan would have sold even less if it wasnt at wembley

They are played at Wembley for 15 years as part of the financial package covering the rebuilding project.

A Newcastle v Sunderland semi would be there, as would Cardiff v Swansea.

It's so wrong, but it will take quite something to overturn it.

How come they were held there from the 1993/94 season for a bit Malcy boy??

personally think it's another reason NOT to play them at Wembley

Old Trafford, St James, Emirates, Villa, wherever, just not wembley

For Wigan, what about Chester's ground?

pie consumers have sold less than 10,000 tickets !

as a result of their efforts a neutral area has been introduced

In 1991 the Spurs-Arsenal semi was held at Wembley. It was held at Wembley to accommodate more spectators than Stamford Bridge could hold. In fact it had the biggest attendance for a semi since Bolton-Blackburn at Maine Road in 1958.

The only earlier all London semis had been Arsenal-Chelsea in 1950 and 1952 (plus a replay on each occasion) and these were (all) held at White Hart Lane.

In 1993 Spurs-Arsenal met again and were allocated Wembley.

It so happened that the other semi was all Sheffield, and the clubs complained that their final opponents would have an advantage by having played there a few weeks earlier. So their match was switched from (I think) OT to Wembley.

The next year both semis were at Wembley, although the ManU-Oldham replay was at Maine Road.

Semis then reverted to their traditional venues (even Chelsea-Wimbledon in 1997 was held at Highbury) until 2000, when Chelsea-Newcastle and Bolton-Villa were held there before the rebuilding began.

We sold about 28000 from memory.

Our biggest followings were Liverpool and Boro - about 33k for each - and I reckon we could have sold more. The Liverpool tickets sold out over a weekend I seem to remember. The Boro game we all know quite a few who missed out cos of the ticket office fiasco. Most probably got one by hook or crook but I reckon a few didn't.

Other semis and play-offs I think were: Reading 28, Watford 31, Villa 26, Preston 25 (crowd was 54 so think they had about 29, not 33 - but as someone said, they'd not had such a big game for 40 years), Stoke 27 or 28. Going further back, think we had 25 for Bristol City, 28 for Torquay and 22 for Tranmere (to their 8 - hence the piped crowd noises from their end).

Not sure what this tells us other than that when there's a chance of serious silverware Whites fans turn out en masse. Play-offs and semis that should be played at neutral grounds are a harder sell.

And dont forget that outside the v top clubs there can't be many who've had more days out at Wembley or Cardiff in last 25 years or so than us.

See I just don't get the whole banter thing re how many fans a club happens to attract.

It it what it is,its not the fault of Wigan as a club or it's fans that it has 10k unsold tickets.

I personally think Wigan do pretty well on support considering they were getting 1&2 thousand in the early 90's and pretty much came out of nowhere not long before that.

That along with it being a total rugby town.

And not to mention they have a lot, including us on their doorstep, there simply isn't enough folk to go around.

Us having a stab at wigans support is a bit like kettle and pot if you ask me,as we hardly have a history of covering ourselves in glory when it comes to support.

Aye, especially as most don't even see them as rivals...

Think we are more than entitled to laugh at Wigan. Their lack of support is an indication of their lack of history and that's why we look down on them. They are a set of nasty little fuckers who hate Bolton and things will not be right in the football world until the natural order has been restored and they are below us. If they stayed in the Premier League for another twenty years they wouldn't get any more supporters. We have had some fantastic away followings for an average size club going back decades when Wigan were still playing in the pop and crisps Cheshire League or whatever.

Not that I'm bitter or owt but I hate these jumped up feckers. Having said all that, playing semi finals at Wembley is a disgrace. It just to pay back the inflated cost of the new Wembley and devalues the final in my opinion. I also hate the corporate empty seats right opposite the cameras but what do the FA care, they have been paid for. Wembley should be for the final only.

See I just don't get the whole banter thing re how many fans a club happens to attract.

Well summed up mate. Clubs that don't win much pipe on about crowds. Example, wolves on Saturday. In the grand scheme of thing crowd size means very little and makes little difference on the pitch.

This mocking of Wigans support makes me so nervous I can't dare check our comparative home gates this season!

Agreed, we dont need to be the next West Ham or Sunderland in going on about fans, we didnt care when we took tiny followings to London following uefa games so dont see why we should care now.

From the BBC report 'the unprecedented step of creating a neutral zone'. Another first for Wiggin but we mustn't laugh.

Some wildly inaccurate figures being banded out all over the place. All the cockwaving about crowds gets a bit tiresome, sort of thing we should leave to Sunderland fans really.
