I've paid so much commission to that weird fucker with a teen bride down the years, I probably funded 10% of cost of that ^ latest farcial attempt to play Buck Rogers.

He's the poster boy for Oedipus Complex...

He's also a dope-shooter.

And his kid is called XR3i Ghia.

ISS is being retired in 2031

Going to crash it into the pacific.

Hell of a ride for the astronauts

I know loads of you are into this stuff, but I couldn't be less interested in space if I tried.

Here's an idea, spend the billions spunked on trying to find other habitable planets on saving/improving the one you're currently destroying.

All relative my old China. The spending compared to defence is a drop in the ocean . Or a big fuckin splash in this caseΒ

Comparing the money spent on space to that spent on defence isn't a persuasive argument to me.

Countries see defence spending as essential. I doubt anyone sees the money spent on space as essential.

NASA alone spent 23 billion dollars on space exploration in 2020, I could think of many better ways (IMO, of course) on how to spend it.

Still a relatively small figure in the grand scheme.Β
In an idea world I’d spend it all on famine and the homeless but the reality is it won’t be sad but trueΒ

Get where you're coming from Traf- I guess it's a case of costs v benefits.

A lot of important research into all manner of things goes on as part of the whole "space" industry.Β

I guess that's the balance that all governments and industries involved have to get right.

I'd just rather not have kids starving around the world and that could be helped by not sending remote controlled cars to Mars.

It couldn't though could it, unless you think the world works like Toytown.

On the other hand advances in medicine, engineering, materials science, biology etc may well have produced many many benefits to the world's population, in many ways.

We could stop spending our money on going to the football or on eating out, and pass it on to the starving.Β

Where do you draw the line?

Were they only possible by sending people into space?

Yes and no, most of these advances were of course developed here on earth so could have been found without needing to send people to space. However the need to tackle problems which don't exist on earth will have pushed development of certain technologies through innovations unlikely to be discovered by chance, or in other fields, so may never be found or have taken significantly longer to develop. There is also research being carried out in zero gravity though which would not be possible on earth.

So what do you spend the space money on? Farming methods,Β  food or contraception?Β

Worlds biggest telescope due to get its first image in 2027.

Great but they could have come up with a more imaginative name.

Extremely Large Telescope - Wikipedia

I mean what will the next one be called? "The Fucking Big Telescope"? If Elon Musk builds it he'll put a risque pun into itΒ  like he did with "Falcon Heavy" etc for his rockets

He did this as well of course! 😁
