so, hitting folk who are going to work

fantastic

Not hitting them, helping them.  The idea is to prevent the school run mums doubling the amount of traffic on the roads. There may be a premium to pay. That's the choice of the driver.

50 minutes since I got to Victoria. Train is just leaving now.

It's a fucking joke this place.

Where is the choice? we don't have that luxury when we have to drive at certain times.

Turns out the month closure of upper brook street isn't even tfgm, it's brunt wood doing up the old bbc site

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/commuters-start-2017-gridlock-three-12395409#ICID=ios_MENNewsApp_AppShare_Click_FB

Tfgm aren't really responsible for most road works to be honest, they basically set transport policy, part of which is building new tram lines obviously, which causes road works, but local councils all co ordinate their own road works and all have reps on tfgm.

The only time I involve tfgm is if I need a set of traffic lights turning off or a bus lane is going to have a hole in it, other than that, co ordination and/or permits is done by the relevant councils highways depts who then let tfgm know if there's going to be disruption etc.

Took the Mrs 90 minutes to get back from Piccadilly

The trains have been horrendous for a few months now, not sure what's going on

She's clearly heavily pregnant as well but cunts are letting her stand up

I've told her to take the car and sit in the traffic instead, at least she's not on her feet

Then Manc city council's highway department are absolute fucknuts

My guess would be that the extra cost would be claimable.

This is just an idea to rid the streets of the mums and kids on the school runs. Obviously nothing about it is anything more than a suggestion.

Edited by ZicoKelly

wtf does claimable mean

and how do you suggest a parent working full time gets kids to school without being on the road at peak times

they often have to drop off and have a few minutes to get to work

We're crazy if we try to build infrastructure that runs smoothly at rush hour based on current levels

We would have 10 lane motorways that are barely used for 80% of the day. Ten carriage trains going the same way

We need more flexible / home working to spread / reduce the traffic out across the day. Everyone on a 9-5 is bonkers

Appreciate a train an hour late will still be no good and that needs sorting but think employers can do more to have people working from home a lot more to reduce congestion (appreciate this works in some not all jobs but it would help all the same)

The Mrs train into Manchester cancelled this morning, an extra 20 minute wait at Chorley station

The running of those lines in and out of Manchester are descending into farce! I'm not sure how nationalising them may improve them unless they throw a shit load of extra tax payers money at it, in which case why not just subsidise it further as it currently sits

when's the electrification works finish on the Mcr-Preston line? they're supposed to improve reliability aren't they?

Not sure, though I believe a lot of the recent cancellations are down to being short staffed rather than engineering works

Get the migrants to be ticket inspectors

Get the migrants to be revenue officers

Happened to me before Xmas

Train due on time according to online and the station signs....it just never showed and no announcement anywhere

Tweeted Northern Rail, they said it was due to understaffing

1) it's ridiculous

2) why didn't they announce it? I'd have made alternative arrangements

It's all well and fine them pushing us to use public transport but when it's wank, unreliable, infrequent and a pain in the arse most of us prefer to stick to cars

I don't think Micky has ever "properly" commuted.

Commuting for me is now a thing of the past, fortunately. But yes, I've commuted and I know from sitting in traffic for ninety minutes from Harwood to Manchester on a school day or twenty five minutes during school holidays that the problem isn't the distance, it's the school runs. I accept that lots of parents need to be dropping kids off and then going to work. That would be commuting within the peak times and should be paid for. Others, who are only going to school, dropping off then returning home can fuck off.

Put it this way, if your car tax went up £x.xx but it gave you the right to drive in peak times, your choice would be pay up, travel by public transport or travel outside of the peak times.

As Birch points out (above) having everyone on a 9-5 contract is bonkers. The introduction of flexi-time may have helped slightly but not so you'd notice.

Roads aren't quieter because of school runs. They are quieter in holiday periods because more people have to be off work to look after their kids during school holidays. And also because school holidays often coincide with holidays every other adult takes, e.g. Christmas, Easter, Summer. So you just get fewer people going into work at those times.

As above, you can't solve this problem by increasing capacity. You have to reduce demand. And the way to do that is staggered hours, more flexible working and more working from home. The technology is there now to support this.

Also allowing private companies to profit by running appalling train services is the height of stupidity.

Then using said profits to run state railways across Europe.

Saying roads aren't quieter / busier because of school runs is simply wrong

Not just that

And for the other reasons prescribed but three do have an effect

If Bury Grammar is off, its a piece of piss getting through the town at school run times.

All the other schools could be in but every kid must get dropped off by car at that place.
