Tradesmen (Esp Builders)...

...a waste of fucking time.

You'd think they'd want to work.

Need a builder etc, got the names of five recommends over a month ago.

1 of the 5 bothered to turn up and quote just over three weeks ago.

He hasn't sent a quote or contacted me.

No wonder the foreigners are taking all the jobs, it's what "our lot" deserve.

Featured Replies

Exactly. Which is why I'm happy to promote the very few decent folk we encounter.

Three of the five were recommended by people on here.

None turned up to quote, despite one living three miles from me.

Is there a case that people recommend "tradesmen" because they are their mates ergo must be good? But have zero experience of their professional cuntishness?

Did they confirm they'd come & quote?

"I need a quote to have my sex dungeon extended"

Not surprised they aren't queueing round the block to get a price in for that.

i'll send you a message

I've had the run around with plasterers for the last 2 weeks. One shit house was 'training' at the gym every night this week. Fair enough see you Saturday morning then. He then went for a jog Saturday morning when he should of been at mine and was then surprised I fucked him off.

Traf  -  sent you a PM, Matt ask Traf for the number i've sent him mate,he's a sound lad.

I still owe the plasterer who did my house some money, he didn't show up to finish the job despite chasing him several times.

I stopped chasing him, got someone else in, and the first lad has never even asked for his money.

You do get some good lads but they are few and far between, it's so frustrating.

Supply and demand....there's so much work that they can treat folk like shit and just move on

I assume it's down to all the kids going to 6th form and Uni leading to less tradesmen...

We've had it for a while with electricians, plumbers, joiners etc....

I got sorted but thanks anyway pal.

We had some work done few months back came to around 4k,1 builder said to small of a job when he came to have a look wtf!,when someone did do it the fucker turned up when he felt like it????

Ours turned up 2 weeks late. He blamed the scaffolders. Front of house now has scaffolding up. He came, did a day's work. Then it rained. Then it was weekend. Then he managed half a day even though we had glorious sunshine. And then he fucked off on holiday for a week. All the while our Sky dish is block and we're having to make do with Freeview! Oh, and he wanted paying for the scaffolding up front (ie. some money for his bloody holiday!).

Same builder came to quote for a load of internal work in our cellar. With no time limits we said he could use it as a filler job when the weather was too crappy for outdoor work. He's still never given us a quote. So we've offered it to a family member. 4 weeks ago he said he'd come and do it in 2 weeks..... still not seen him.

Truly believe folk don't want the work or can't be arsed with the customer service side of things.

This is why me teeth itch when the bone idle say they cannot find work.

There fuckloads about and the migrants are going to be picking up the slack.

We are turning work away simply because we can't get staff to do the work and those that do are asking for a few quid extra which saying they've been more or less on the same rates for about 8 years (without striking I might add) it's a fair call.

We've just had a loft conversion done. They turned up when they said they would, did the job quietly, the neighbours were happy with them as there were no radios blaring & they tidied up after themselves both at the end of the day & whenever they dropped anything on the shared driveway. I've now got a plumber, sparks, plasterer & chippie to call on when needed. And not an Eastern European amongst them. Well impressed with them.

I feel your pain Traf.  I've advertised 3 times for Joiners to fit a load of shelves.  It's been designed and measured out already and it's far from a small job.  3 separate Joiners turned up, all promised to have my quote back within the week - never heard anything since.

Same with some roofing repairs I need, keep getting let down.

I've also advertised for a plumber, for moving a couple of radiators.  Had a phone call but I'm not convinced he's going to turn up.

It's so frustrating, the moneys there and I just want to get stuff finished.

There's a great roofer on here

Never used them myself but mate of mine had one bloke who was converting his loft into a bedroom + en suite

Think he paid for half the job up front for materials and that, the guy did about two thirds of it then just fucked off

He also left a load of tools behind but never came back for them

Bizarre

Try "ratedpeople.com" it was the only way I could get anyone when I wanted my parking area extended. The tradesmen who apply for your job pay a fee to the website upfront so they are interested which helps.  The lads who came were keen and did a good job, albeit a bit above budget and a bit slower (2 days longer) than they said.

access to all the garages at the bottom of about 10 gardens goes along the side of our house, so it's shared responsibility. Don't worry, it doesn't go through our garden, there's a 6 foot fence. Anyhow, got a chap to build the library & another to do the wardrobes in the 2 larger original bedrooms, plus the carpet fitter through Checkatrade & Rated People. The window chap was a friend of the locksmith up the road.

The ones I have had most trouble with turning up & doing quotes are electricians. Until I found the one who worked with the loft builder, I had a 10% success rate with them turning up & giving a price. And getting a decent gardener has proved nigh on impossible.

Don't think we're all the same.  A lot of people in this game are lazy cunts granted, but not all of us

What's your trade?

Maybe the builders don't trust the client on getting paid/changing the job half way through/trying to get it on the cheap/taking the piss etc.....

Most I know in the building game are honest, reliable etc and have plenty of work but turn down jobs through lack of trust. The amount of times I've read on here " do you know a good cheap.... no such thing as good and cheap.... If you want a good job pay the money or do it yourself or get messed about.
