Morecambe For A Day Out.

Featured Replies

Went back to the old place today retracing my footsteps, still a shithole, but a nice Lancashire shithole.

It's where my parents met and married (reception 3s/6d a head in 1946).

I went last summer and was saddened by how bad the place now looks. Great memories from going as a kid but I won't be hurrying back

It is a total shithole which is a damn shame.

I went last Friday night to watch the friendly V Bolton, it is a depressing place

There is probably the biggest second hand bookshop in Lancashire on Morecambe front which is good for half an hours browsıng but the town centre  shopping area reminds me of Farnworth.Lancaster whıch is a 5 minute train ride away is a far better place to spend  a few hours.

Nice little park for the kids and that's about it.

I don't know how much they spent doing the front up but it's a bit of a waste when the rest of the place looks like Chernobyl. I never really liked Blackpool because it was disgustingly grubby and tacky but that place makes if look like Vegas.

Is frontier land still open?

Frontier lad was ace as a kid, used to love getting mild whiplash on the mouse and then throwing up in that revolving house.

Frontier land as an adult, I can only imagine it's now like a poor mans Skeggy.

The only bit of it still open when we went last year was the bar along the front.

The rest had been boarded up but at least they kept the boozer thriving!

Remember going to a club there called Harveys a few times. Pretty grim.

Wouldn't mind staying at the art deco Midland Hotel if there was any other reason for going.

Which of 'The Comedians' described it as a graveyard with fairy lights? Was it Charlie Williams? Can't remember.

Not sure, but I think I read that same quote in a novel a while back.

Yep, I think you're right M.

Trudging slowly over wet sand

My Auntie had a static just outside Morcambe (or as my Canadian relatives called it Morry-camby) so spent plenty of time there as a kid, especially on Frontier Land and Happy Mount Gardens.

Not been since i was about 13

I really don't like going back to shit holes which hold fond memories as a child, it really shatters the illusion of a great place you visited with our parents. May be it was great back then, it's just times move on and the lack of money in the area as people jet off abroad so easily these days.

Rhyl is the same for me!

Went to Bispham a few years back to have a gander at that ship that ran aground, it wasn't a complete shithole, but it was still depressing seeing it as it was - Bnb's now regular houses or bedsits, fish and chip shops as kebab shops, postcard and bucket and spade shops now offys (of the 'booze behind plexiglass' variety)...The amusements were still there, I didn't go in as it would've looked suspect, but also because if the monkey on the trapeze hadn't been there I'd have cried... :(

We had Calwells Stag do in Morecombe when we missed the boat to the Isle o man; any way I fell asleep pissed in a night club & when I woke up, some cunt had nicked me trainers

Used to go to Morecambe every Good Friday as a kid. Drove through after a meeting in Heysham a few weeks ago. The prom looked a decent walk, but the shops and front were so run down it was shocking.

Prom looked ideal for a day out wander with youngest, but there's no way I will be venturing there, makes Blackpool look 5 star luxury

My mums got some faded photos of me and my brother holding some monkeys from the early 70's. Guessing it was Bispham/Cleveleys cos they were real snobs and wouldn't entertain Blackpool at all. Fuckers wouldn't take us to the illuminations and buttered us up with chippy on Red Bank Road in Bispham. I did the same with my kids though...

It were a fake monkey on the trapeze, I think... :)

The Chippies on Red Bank Road were at the end of the (good) illuminations, so a bit of a cruel trick to start there, it was usually the end of the tour of the lights and a bag of chips, not a bag of chips and that's yer lot...

Crabbing on the Boating Pool or a go on the trikes or the motorboats was also good as a kid.
