Just had a meeting on Churchgate. Sad to see the Bolton News offices empty. And in a week or two the Travel Counsellors building opposite will be empty. Another 200+ people spending approx £20 per week on parking and lunches in the town... plus whatever other services they spend their hard-earned on - all being lost. Very sad state of affairs.

 

When will it get better? Should these empty offices be turned into apartments?

Think the council need to move on from just bigging up the food festival and Iron Man as triumphs whenever someone mentions the town centre. 

They use them as a shield to deflect that the rest of the time it's a shit hole. Times are hard but it needs a major reshuffle to get it back right again. The town centre has shrunk massively, and places like the market now sits away from the centre, get something going on down that stretch (it's an empty mess). Try and get some of the outlier shops to move there with incentives. 

They're doing building work on the old M&S building, anyone know what's happening there? 

Honestly feels like there has been a plan to kill it off for the last 20 years.

Have you been to that area lately? The whole stretch boundaried by Deansgate, Moor Lane , Blackhorse St and Ashburner St is currently being built on. The former Odeon Cinema is being built on.

Granted, it isn’t with a view to creating a shopping experience similar to that in Bury but “it’s an empty mess” stopped being true about 6-12 months ago.
