It was just shit. What they do, as good a service as it is, sometimes, is a paid role within the civil service for which we have absolutely no way of not paying for. We have no choice. We have to pay tax and they get paid a wage relative to their skills.

I'd agree with that. From personal experience of working alongside them though, our binners aren't badly paid and like smiffs said, there are far fewer folk able to play elite football and get the trappings with it.

They're are fairly cosseted bunch. True they have to work in the rain, but that's about it. We had a far shittier job and even with a decent result on the grading review, we still got less.

I'm reading a book about the financial crash at the moment. One of the points the author makes is that whilst the Cold War was happening there was this huge ideological battle between communism on one hand and capitalism on the other. The battle was over which system would give its citizens not only the most money - but also the greatest amount of social justice. Without any argument - capitalism won on both counts. Western liberal democracies were without question the pinnacle of human achievement in how a functioning society could operate. His goes on to suggest that since the break of of the Soviet Union, capitalism and the free market was fully unleashed but without the handbrake of the social justice part. Consequently things have for out of hand - the system is unsustainable - inequality is increasing instead of being reduced - people are worse off than their parents were for the first time in generations.

 

If you look at how the balance on wealth has shifted over the past 20 years it's frightening.

 

Now I'm not saying that Jezzers plan is a great one. Or that I necessarily agree with it. But it's an issue which is now at least in the public domain - and an important one in terms of continuing social cohesion over the coming decades.

The problem with him is that all he's fussed about is preaching to the converted, getting the plaudits from a meeting of Islington dinner party socialists, unwashed Dave Sparts  or union bods who have zilch in common with him but who will clap him just to make him feel good. And in one sense that's understandable  - it's an easy life, you feel wanted, people cheer him and there's always going to be a gaggle of fruity socialist student lasses to goggle at as they fawn over him from the front row of the meeting

But in the end it achieves fuck all. There was a thing a bit back where he turned up late (or not at all, I can't remember) for a meeting somewhere up north (might have been Burnley) as he'd been at a pro-Venezuela rally. When the question was asked what his priorities were he said summat to the effect of "well plenty of people in Burnley care about Venezuela too".

Now that's obvious bollocks on at least two levels. Firstly 99.9% of Burnley couldn't give a shite about Venezuela (after all, their attention never strays much further afield than Bacup). But more importantly, if there is a genuine world issue that the UK can help deal with then no amount of fringe meetings will help - it has to be through government. Which means you might want to present a policy/image that will give you a chance of forming a government. But he's not interested or remotely capable of that - he just wants to carry on what he's done all his life and garner the plaudits of the faithful at whatever event he can get to.

I don't know much about these things and his history - but what has he ever achieved or brought about in politics? Even from the back benches of the opposition - has he ever pushed through / instigated anything that has actually matters? I'd like to know; because if after this time in politics the answer is "nothing" then what's the fucking point of him? Even if you were not of the same political persuasion and didn't agree with something he'd got implemented, you could at least say he'd gone with his beliefs and made the effort to get summat done. But all he seems to do is play to a well rehearsed and sycophantic audience. Nice for him but fuck all use for anyone else.

Yep, I had precisely the same issues on grass cutting routes. Some chap behind a screen would take the areas of grass on his map and add a few local ones together until he got 20000m2. A day's work.

 

Except that he never went out to look at sites. Eg one site, only 2000m2 was gaited and not accessible with a ride on mower. Had to be done with hand tools and very carefully as they were old folks' gardens. Took almost a full morning. No chance of meeting the day's target after that.

I am not proposing similar pay, clearly that is unrealistic. In principle I agree with the idea of wage caps in football but it will probably never happen. And that is why BWFC will eventually become semi-pro because the gap is now ridiculous.

25 players in a squad = £25m in total playing salary, add in other running costs and staff etc, lets say £50m outgoings

 

The lowest club in the league easily brings in more than double that, some like Man Utd are getting closer to a billion - where would all that lefty over profit go? Granted the HMRC would get a taste in the way of CORP TAX but the profits after tax would go straight to the owners (Glazier family, Ambramovic, City's owners etc) - Straight back out of the country without having a single positive impact of Dave the Digger driver from Dagenham

 

Then you would find that our clubs cannot pay the wages that other countries like China, Spain, Italy, France etc etc are paying and we wouldn't attract the best talent, they would go elsewhere and then our product would get worse. The knock on effect would be that our TV rights would sell for less and less as the product is poor. Again all it would mean is we are cutting our nose off to spite our face, we would be turning off a tap that drives billions of pounds a years from other countries into the UK. We don't export a great deal of things well but football is one of them (for the time being) - Dave the Digger driver would see no benefit yet again, if anything he would be worse off as the country loses vital revenue driving the economy

 

The only way you could possibly cap it is with a worldwide cap but even then I'm not sure how legal it would be to restrict the income of one particular industry, you would have to do it with the movie industry, musicians etc etc
